A Jewish Woman’s Quest for Justice

I am a Jew. I was a participant in the Rally for the Right of Return to Palestine. It was the right thing to do. I’ve heard about the European holocaust against the Jews since I was a small child. I’ve visited the memorials in Washington, DC and Jerusalem dedicated to Jewish lives lost and I’ve cried at the recognition to what level of atrocity mankind is capable of sinking.

Where are the Jews of conscience? No righteous malice can be held against the survivors of Hitler’s holocaust. These fragments of humanity were in no position to make choices beyond that of personal survival. We must not forget that being a survivor or a co-religionist of the victims of the European Holocaust does not grant dispensation from abiding by the rules of humanity.

“Never again” as a motto, rings hollow when it means “never again to us alone.” My generation was raised being led to believe that the biblical land  was a vast desert inhabited by a handful of impoverished Palestinians living with their camels and eking out a living in the sand. The arrival of the Jews was touted as a tremendous benefit to these desert dwellers. Golda Meir even assured us that there “is no Palestinian problem”.

We know now this picture wasn’t as it was painted. Palestine was a land filled with people who called it home. There were thriving towns and villages, schools and hospitals. There were Jews, Christians and Muslims. In fact, prior to the occupation, Jews represented a mere seven per cent of the population and owned three per cent of the land.

Taking the blinders off for a moment, I see a second atrocity perpetuated by the very people who should be exquisitely sensitive to the suffering of others. These people knew what it felt like to be ordered out of your home at gun point and forced to march into the night to unknown destinations or first hand what it means to watch your home in flames, to surrender everything dear to your heart at a moment’s notice. Bulldozers levelled hundreds of villages, along with the remains of the village inhabitants, the old and the young. This was nothing new to the world.

Poland is a vast graveyard of the Jews of Europe. Israel is the final resting place of the massacred Palestinian people. A short distance from the
memorial to the Jewish children lost to the holocaust in Europe there is a levelled park ing lot. Under this parking lot is what’s left of a once
flourishing village and the bodies of men, women and children whose only crime was taking up needed space and not leaving graciously. This particular
burial marker reads: “Public Parking”.

I’ve talked with Palestinians. I have yet to meet a Palestinian who hasn’t lost a member of their family to the Israeli Shoah, nor a Palestinian who cannot name a relative or friend languishing under inhumane conditions in an Israeli prison. Time and time again, Israel is cited for human rights violations to no avail. On a recent trip to Israel, I visited the refugee camps inhabited by a people who have waited 52 years in these ‘temporary’ camps to go home. Every Palestinian grandparent can tell you the name of their village, their street, and where the olive trees were planted. Their grandchildren may never have been home, but they can tell you where their great-grandfather lies buried and where the village well stood. The press has fostered the portrait of the Palestinian terrorist. But the victims who rose up against human indignity in the Warsaw Ghetto are called heroes. Those who lost their lives are called martyrs. The Palestinian who tosses a rock in desperation is a terrorist.

Two years ago I drove through Palestine and watched intricate sprinkler systems watering lush green lawns of Zionist settlers in their new condomin ium complexes, surrounded by armed guards and barbed wire in the midst of a Palestinian community where there was not adequate water to drink and the surrounding fields were sandy and dry. University professor Moshe Zimmerman reported in the Jerusalem Post (30 April, 1995), “The [Jewish] children of Hebron are just like Hitler’s youth.”

We Jews are suing for restitution, lost wages, compensation for homes, land, slave labour and back wages in Europe. Am I a traitor of a Jew for supporting the right of return of the Palestinian refugees to their birthplace and compensation for what was taken that cannot be returned?

The Jewish dead cannot be brought back to life and neither can the Palestinian massacred be resurrected. David Ben Gurion said, “Let us not ignore the truth among ourselves…politically, we are the aggressors and they defend themselves…The country is theirs, because they inhabit it, whereas we want to come here and settle down, and in their view we want to take away from them their country…”.

Palestine is a land that has been occupied and emptied of its people. Its cultural and physical landmarks have been obliterated and replaced by tidy Hebrew signs. The history of a people was the first thing eradicated by the occupiers. The history of the indigenous people has been all but eradicated as though they never existed. And all this has been hailed by th e world as a miraculous act of God. We must recognise that Israel’s existence is not even a question of legality so much as it is an illegal fait accompli realised through the use of force while supported by the Western powers. The UN missions directed at Israel in attempting to correct its violations of have thus far been futile.

In Hertzl’s ‘The Jewish State’ the father of Zionism said: “We must investigate and take possession of the new Jewish country by means of every modern expedient.” I guess I agree with Ehud Barak (3 June 1998 ) when he said, “If I were a Palestinian, I’d also join a terror group.” I’d go a step further perhaps. Rather than throwing little stones in desperation, I’d hurtle a boulder.

Hopefully, somewhere deep inside, every Jew of conscience knows that this was no war; that this was not God’s restitution of the holy land to it’s rightful owners. We know that a human atrocity was and continues to be perpetuated against an innocent people who couldn’t come up with the arms and money to defend themselves against the western powers bent upon their demise as a people.

We cannot continue to say, “But what were we to do?” Zionism is not synonymous with Judaism. I wholly support the rally of the right of return of the Palestinian people.

Gaza: A war of religions or nations?

With Israel starting the official invasion of Palestine, we’ve been itching to write about all that is wrong, stupid, amateurish and possibly right about this war. Several things come to mind when you read the newspaper or see the media discuss the role played by Hamas, Palestine, Israel, the United States, Europe and the Arab Nations. Before we delve into the discussion of what really should happen or has happened, we would like to take a moment to question the motives of Western media and to question the general level of intelligence of those reporting.

Before Israel launched its offensive or invasion, apparently Hamas was successfully firing 70-80 rockets on a daily basis. What shocks us is that after firing 80 rockets, Hamas is able to destroy one building and kill one person, whereas with one Israeli offensive, tens of hundreds of people are destroyed. We are, therefore, forced to adopt one of two options: The Israeli’s are lying, which is highly likely given the nation’s moral character (to gain sympathy), or two, Hamas really is a group of silly motherfuckers who don’t think that the accuracy (or lack thereof) of their rockets only reflects on their lack of military training and abilities. The truth is, that both scenarios are highly likely, but the fact that Western media, which is a proponent of western, pro Israeli murder by means of western governments’ support of Israel, fails to bring to light issues as simple as this. Having read tons of articles in London newspapers, we have yet to come across any that discuss what really happens with the 80 rockets that Hamas fires on a daily basis and kill one person. The amount of reported rockets, may, therefore, be highly exaggerated.

The way Israel has always asked the world for sympathy because of Hitler’s blunder that was the holocaust can be likened to John McCain’s request to the American people for sympathy during the US election: i.e., “I got fucked many years ago, so please, side with me.” The difference, however, is that Israel has marketed itself far better than John McCain did, and that’s saying something; it is also precisely the reason that Arab nations over the last week have failed to accomplish anything.

It is no secret that Israel had setup an information directorate nine months ago, the goal of which was to market the agendas and position of Israel and to have the world see a certain picture before such an offensive was launched. The Guardian in London painted a very good picture of this creative advertising technique employed by the Israeli Parliament, and it has clearly paid off.

What’s more to notice is that during the last month of the end of the Bush regime, the Taliban offensive that was launched with joint US-British forces has succeeded, apparently weakening the Taliban hold in Afghanistan. The Israel attack is the second major offensive against so called Muslim extremists or terrorists that the George Bush has supported on his way out, and it can be seen as a clear signal by the Islamic World of the kind hatred Bush may personally hold for Muslims. If that is, infact the case, it sad, at best.

We could go on and on writing about how the US classification of Hamas, Hezbollah and Taliban as terrorists is wrong. In the Gaza war, the terrorist is clearly Israel, and the fact that the US and Arab nations alike have looked the other way is a clear signal of US discrimination and Arabs having sold their souls for US dollars. However, it comes as no surprise. May we take this moment to make Americans realize that the Taliban were a creation of the United States, funded with American tax dollars, and armed with Israeli weapons.  Such is the state of American foreign policy and the world’s ignorance.  But it’s no surprise then, that the US has backed Israel.  American politics is a victim of the so called free economy, which means the politicians firmly believe that when they are in power, they should take and make as much money as they can.  That’s capitalism, isn’t it:  the ability to get what you can when you can; survival of the fittest.

It may be clear from the reading so far that we don’t support Israel’s actions.  That’s no surprise, a lot of people across the world don’t.  If you look at the US meter of measurement of terrorism, Israel officially qualifies as a terrorist nation, and let us all be in agreement there.  However, if you have noted from this whole article so far, we have yet to use the world Jew.  The reason, flat out, is that we don’t beleive, as should Muslims across the world, that it has come down to a battle between Judaism and Islam.  If that were the case, Islam would win by sheer manpower (if, ofcourse, Muslims could ever unite).  Of course, this is our opinion.

We’re still not very clear on who this is a war against:  Islam or Palestinians.   Hamas certainly is not the target here, and we refuse to believe when Israel says that Hamas is, just like it claimed Hezbollah was the target in Lebanon.  Those are lies, and Israelis know it, but as we’ve seen from the media and behavior of Israeli PMs in the past, lying is a chronic problem amongst Israeli Politics.  Well, okay, we’re a little biased.  It’s a global political problem, but it’s our blog, so whatever we say goes here.

However, if you take a step back and look at the global reaction amongst not national and political leaders, but the people, Jews, Christians and Muslims alike have taken to the streets to protest against the oppression of Israel in Palestine.  We would, therefore, urge Muslims all over the world to see that this is a war of nations and not a war of religions.  Not yet.  Maybe that’s what the Israeli Information Directorate has been trying to market and we’ve bought into it.  But if you do believe that this is a war of religions, I suspects Jews all over the world, and all of them, would be pro Israel invading Palestine.  But that is not the case and is, therefore, something that all Muslims must respect.

The problem, however, is that Arab and Muslim leaders all over the world have failed to make this distinction, which is why they have failed to take action.  If Saudi Arabia or Syria were to say for one minute that is not a war of religions but a flat out national invasion, once like Russia was accused of when South Otessia was in question, they may be able to gain ground to legitimately enter a path of aggressive negotiations with Israelis and Americans.  Hell, with a thought out, educational stance like that, the Arab world could solicit the help of Russia, which will more than shut up Bush and Boner in America alike.  But, alas, the Arab leaders lack the sense, sensibility and the education devise an intellectually powerful plan to take on the mightly wit of the Israelis.  Instead, they are hosting summits and sessions while Palestine gets destroyed.

It would be a matter of common sense for them state that this is not a war of religions but a war of nations, and in the 21st centry, nations do not invade.  It is unacceptable.  If Arabs cannot take that stance, we’re not so sure they will have the option negotiation.  They are left with 2 options in the event that they let this become a war of religions:  Fight Israel and America, or see millions of Muslims die at the hands of Jews.  It’s murder, committed by the Jews, assisted by the Americans, allowed by the Arabs and witnessed by the world.
