Well, sort of. Apparently HP has now released a required new BIOS upgrade F.39 for owners of some of their fine line (sense the sarcasm) of notebook PCS, including hp pavillion dv2000/6000/9000 & compaq presario v3000/v6000 series laptops. Here is a reproduction of the email I’ve received from them. If you own a laptop in that series, I suggest you visit the link in this email and see what you can get:
HP recently released a required new BIOS, version F.39, for certain HP Pavilion dv2000 and Compaq Presario V3000 series notebook PCs.
To obtain important information about this new BIOS release, please visit the web site link at the bottom of this email.
HP Limited Warranty Service Enhancement
HP has announced a service enhancement program for certain HP Pavilion dv2000, and Compaq Presario V3000 series notebook PCs.
You may be entitled to a free repair.
HP records show that you have registered one of these products.
If you do own one of these products, HP suggests that you visit the web site below for additional details.

This can be potentially useful for some people, especially, I presume, if you are based in the US. I have yet to go through the instructions, but anyone who does, please post your feedback to share with the rest of us.
In another event, a California judge has ruled against HP in another (I believe) class action lawsuit, whereby some dv2000 and dv6000 series had a defective inverter, where your laptop screen would turn black or blue while running on battery, thereby rendering the computer useless until rebooted or put to sleep and reawakened. I found information pertaining to this on the internet last week, but didn’t save it, so I don’t have a link handy to the law firm’s website. If anyone comes across it, please share the link. My notebook is one such notebook.
The sad part, which I believe triggered the reaction from the judge, was that HP knew about the defective inverter when the notebooks went on sale, and despite knowing about it, they charged customers in excess of US $ 650 per notebook to fix the problem. For the record, the inverter costs about US $ 20, according to the news post I read on the law firm’s website.

HP is definately a PITA. (pain in the a*s) I have a V6000 and let me tell you, it’s HELL! My warranty just expired, my hard drive is DEFECTIVE from what HP update tells me. Every day I have to reformat and re install, AND I get BSOD every like two hours. Service here sucks too, all i can say is, I’m buying a Dell XPS M1530 and never looking back, at this rate, I’m suprised HP isn’t bankrupt.

They don’t even provide driver software to customer and neither you can’t download them from their sites cause they don’t even know which model needs which driver. I have a compaq presario v6000 laptop and i downloaded the drivers for wireless from the hp site and it srewed up my laptop but they put the driver under these model section. And every time i start my laptop it shows new new errors sometimes os not found sometimes volume doesn’t come sometimes the wireless doesn’t connect you have to put the wireless password again and again to connect to the same wireless network. This laptop is bulls**t.

I have dv2000. Tomorrow I should be getting a box to yet again ship my laptop off to be *repaired* because of this problem. I’m annoyed that I have to send it off again and maybe this will happen again. I’m relieved at the same time though as my 1 yr. warranty expired in August and this is covered. On a side note, I’ve never encountered the wireless problems. Just the blank screen thing and some weird screen before it eventually goes to the blank screen.

I just call their help line and they said i miss the Hp limited warranty by 3 months and it would cost $300.00 to replace the mother board. The hell with that i rather invest on a new labtop that won’t break down on me.

I just call the help line and they told me a missed the HP limited warranty deadline also. The wanted me to pay $300 bucks to replace the mother board. The interesting part is that I registered my laptop with them when I bought it. I get 2 emails a week with HP deals and sales info but I did not get any emails when they instituted the limited warranty program I run their stupid HP TotalCare app, which could have been used to rely this information. HP Customer service is Horrible!!!!

I also have a dv2000 and a dv6000. Both of them have black screens and will not boot. Of course the warranty was out. I called HP and the said it would cost $250 to fix them. And get this, there on the defective list. I am getting in touch with trouble shooters to put it on the network.

I too have an dv2000 series laptop which is not quite three years old. I have been having the video problem for some time and just lost my wireless capabilities. HP told me $398 to fix. I questioned why I did not get email alerts when the problem was discovered but they didn’t have an answer. Eveyone should send them onion letters!
I have just lost confidence in a company I have always respected.

I have a dv2000 series, as well… The battery already had to be replaced because of recalls… And then the sound went out. We had to send in the computer twice. So now it’s doing the overheating thing, kiling my sound, and some random chick at HP that barely spoke any language at all (I’m pretty sure she was drooling and filled with preprogrammed responses) kept trying to tell me I needed to pay hundreds of dollars to fix a computer I paid over a thousand for already. Let’s not forget to mention the fact that the thing was shoddily put together by small children in chains, I assume, as the screenlock (WHY DOES THAT EXIST???) got jammed at some point, and snapped the hinge on the let side, making the screen unstable… It makes a rather scary cracking noise if it so much as get lightly jarred by a mouse fart from three miles away. It’s not the plastic that is snapped. It’s the METAL FRAME that snapped. I could go forever bout my thousand dollar “entertainment” notebook, that has no sound, is on the verge of having no screen, and won’t pla CD’s or DVD’s. Not that that would matter. THERE IS NO SOUND. So I have a netbook. A very slow… very quiet… EXPENSIVE netbook.

MyDV6000 series laptop won’t turn on, the sound isn’t working, the wireless device already quit, I’ve called hp numerous times, with the same result as many of the comments above.I won’t buy another hp product, and I used to really respect this company. We also have a Livestrong special edition laptop, that is very nice but the case bagan cracking without havingbeen dropped.HP gave couldn’t help with this problem either, even though it was still under warranty at the time, they said they’re cases only crack if dropped. The computer still works great except for the spacebar key, which does not respond when tapped.
Discouraging.
