hp QuickPlay (QPW) Vs. QuickPlay Direct (QPD or HPQPDP)

  • Quickplay Direct and Quickplay for Windows Downloads
  • Latest HP QuickPlay Download Keys
  • New HP Quick Play download keys
  • Okay, I’ve been asked this question in several comments and via email quite a few times, so I’m going create a post.

QuickPlay is a piece of software, like Windows Media Player, that runs your videos and audio.  To use QuickPlay or QuickPlay for Windows, you have to logged into your Windows installation, and it runs like any other normal piece of software.  Say you’re browsing the internet, and you’re done, and want to watch a movie, you either choose QuickPlay from the start menu or you use the Quick Launch Button (QLB) for hp QuickPlay on your laptop.  It will launch QuickPlay for Windows.

QuickPlay Direct, QuickPlay Direct 2.3, specifically the edition available on this website for download, makes a separate installation on a different partition on your hard drive.  You DO NOT have to be logged in to your windows installation or user account to use QuickPlay Direct.  Here’s how it would work.  Your laptop is turned off, but you want to watch a movie or listen to music, but without using any other feature in your normal windows installation.  You hit the QLB DVD button on your laptop, and whala, QuickPlay Direct boots and you can pop in your DVD and start watching.

Here’s where it’s confusing.  QuickPlay for Windows installs like any normal piece of software.  QuickPlay Direct requires installation on a separate partition, and QuickPlay Direct 2.3 automatically installs Windows XP separately on that partition JUST FOR THE USE OF QUICKPLAY DIRECT.  So, if you launched QuickPlay Direct 2.3, you’ll see a Windows XP logo flash on your screen before you go on to HP QuickPlay Direct.  Before QuickPlay 2.3 and 2.0, the QuickPlay Direct versions made a linux installation on your Hard Drive Partition instead of Windows XP.

QuickPlay Direct 2.3 can be installed whether you use Windows Vista or Windows XP on your PC, because it will automatically do its installation of XP.  QuickPlay 2.3 for Windows is Windows 2.3 Compatible.  All QuickPlay for Windows Versions 3.0 and above are only Windows Vista compliant.

i’ve read your posts and a couple of forums too. i have quite sorted out all the procedures of the installation of QPD 2.3 on my HP pavilion dv2500t running Vista Ultimate. only one thing that is bothering is the SATA issues that other people encountered. can you clarify this to me and affirm that your procedure of installation will work in my current setup? I also have the latest BIOS and SATA driver (read it somewhere that i have to install the latest one). also, my BIOS does not have the disable/enable option of SATA native support as others have suggested to adjust for QPD and Vista to work. any suggestions and work around to this matter with the assurance that it would work will be greatly appreciated.

I have installed quickplay 2.3 for windows and quickplay direct 2.3 in a different partition. everything was ok and when i restarted the windows i got boot error. i was using windows xp. i am not able to resolve the problem, can u pls comment how to install quickplay direct on windows XP Pro.
      Thankyou.

Arizoink, my apologies. I somehow missed your post. I will respond to it within the next 24 hours.

      Cheriyan,

Which notebook do you have? Which bios update do you have? The process for installation is the same on both xp and vista, but you must have the correct bios patch installed for it to work, otherwise you will have to tinker with your autoexec.bat to change the boot up settings.

i just installed quickplay 2.3 on my dv9303tx. it came with vista ultimate but i downgraded to xp pro and am now trying to get my tv tuner (EC300 DVB-T) that came bundled with my laptop to work without success. the quickplay 2.3 doesnt show the option to view tv… apparently quickplay is the only thing i can use with my tv tuner… so do u have any ideas on what i can to to view tv from the tuner on my xp install???

      thanks.

    5. Asif Says:

Try the QuickPlay TV download available here.

      Arizoink,

Unfortunately, my experience with SATA issues is only second hand, and I’ve looked through some of the past questions and installations I’ve talked about and done with and for people.

Ultimately, trying is the only way to find out. You see, as long as SATA support is built into the motherboard (which ofcourse it is) AND the QPD installation has all the appropriate drivers built into it (this is the important part), theoretically, you should NOT have a problem. Given that your bios is upto date, I don’t see that there would be any problems, but then new issues come up every day.

I am having trouble installing QPD on my dv66800ea. I have already installed minimal XP and only drivers to avoid conflict. I have partitioned correctly (1028M - X drive)etc. - now the first part installation starts O.K. but when it is time to reboot to install the second stage I get BSOD. I have studied extensively the forums and I have been able to get back into XP by tweaking the boot.ini in the XP c: partition but I have been unable to get stage 2 to complete installing (the drivers etc) even by tweaking the boot.ini in the XP embedded partition. It may be a SATA problem - I get the Windows logo before BSOD. Is it possible to tweak the installation and put in the correct driver in the list as above as I don’t need conexant/nvidia chipset/ATI mobility since mine is Realtek/intel chipset/NVidia GeForce? Your help is much appreciated.

    9. Asif Says:

      David,

the BSD is indicative of your hardware being incompatible with the drivers available for QPD. I wouldn’t bank on SATA being the problem seeing as you actually do get the windows logo.

I’m a little busy this week, but rest assured, I will take out some time to tweak the list of drivers. If you would be kind enough to place a link from HPs website or somewhere so that I can download it and try to make it part of the package, I’d much appreciate it.

I’ll send you an email and post something as soon as I reach some kind of conclusion.

      Hello Asif,

I am Cheriyan, using HP Pavillion dv6087ea, AMD laptop. My BIOS update is, Hewlett-Packard F.3D, 11/22/2007. What i have to do to make the Bios Setting same to get Quickplay 2.3 direct work on my laptop.
      ThankYou

    11. Asif Says:

      Hey Cheriyan.

You need to visit the page on hp.com for your laptop. If there is a separate flash for Windows XP, you need the one for windows XP to make Quickplay irect 2.3 work, since QPD 2.3 runs on a standalone installation of Windows XP.

    12. David Ma Says:

      Hi Asif,

Thanks for the reply. I think on second thoughts you may be right about it not being a SATA issue. I will compile a set of drivers (including the SATA ones just in case) since I had to get them from across several HP models and upload them to Rapid Share. Once I have done that I will give you the links. I’m also busy, so please give me a few days. I’ll get back to you.
I suspect Cheriyan is having the same problems and it may not be as simple as a Bios flash. I didn’t do anything to my Bios when I changed to XP from the factory installed Vista and still managed to install XP and QP successfully.

    13. Asif Says:

The problem is, in all likeliness, driver incompatibility. The compilation that is available for download is pretty old, so I guess it’s about time that it gets an update.
No worries about the time. We’ve all got to do this and other things in our spare time, so I completely understand.
Cheriyan hasn’t really explained what he/she means by not being able to boot. Some people get boot errors due to multiple partitions, too. Others see the BSD due to driver incompatibility.

hello asif, brother i have just reinstalled windows xp in my laptop dv2000 and i have not a clue about what i am supposed to do. if there is a step by step guide on what needs to be done, id much appreciate it. as i have no clue of what sata or bsod or bios ir any of that means.

i thought that id point out that when i do press the quickplay button, windows media player opens up.

I hope this is enough to enable QPD 2.3 to install. To re-cap my laptop model is dv6680ea with Win XP Pro installed. Thanks once angain.

    17. Asif Says:

      Hi David,

I’ll play around with this on the weekend.

      Thanks for all your effort!

      Asif.

    18. donsnok Says:

      Asif,

Is it ever possibe to have QP v3.7 boot without vista booting?. I am using a dv6000 which I formated every thing and installed a retailed vista

    19. Asif Says:

No Donsnok. Quick Play 2.3 Direct was the only version that would boot without booting into your main OS installation. All Quickplay 3.0+ versions are QuickPlay for Windows only and run like any other application on your OS.

    20. David Ma Says:

      Hi Asif,
In order to help with the tweaking of QPD, can you let me know how to access the cab files so I can try and incorporate the drivers which I uploaded. I tried accessing the cab files using WinRAR but it doesn’t recognise the file. We can help each other to lighten your workload and get QPD to install on more up to date laptops.

    21. Asif Says:

      Hi David,

Once again, I apologize for not being able to do this over the weekend. I have a deliverable due for a software development project on Thursday, and I absolutely must get that done first.

To access the CAB files, and add to them, you’ll need a program like Ultimate Zip. http://www.ultimatezip.com/download.htm.

Note that there are two kinds of CAB files, an installshield cab archive and a microsoft CAB archive. I belive this is an installshield compression, so it doesn’t contain the HTM file that accompanies a microsoft file and can be used to uncompress the archive.

Truth is, my knowledge of CAB files is restricted, but I think utlimatezip will put you on the right track. If I can complete my deliverable tomorrow, I will look at extracting making the addition tomorrow.

    22. David Ma Says:

      Hi Asif,

OK I confirm that its an installshield cab and was able to see ALL the files using Zipscan v2.2c. Ultimate Zip can’t read the cab files. Now for the difficult part - incorporating or amending the drivers. I don’t think Zipscan can do anything apart from read what’s inside the cab file. I’ll have to search for another program to do the extract and re-pack.
