AND yet again we come to another grand session of the HP saga of surprises. The problem I’m about to address comes with several different models. In particular, it seems to be very popular with versions of the dv6000 laptop from HP, but my dv2120us from the dv2000 series has now also become a victim of HP’s disappointing hardware. I’ve been a dedicated HP customer for years, and I think the’ve just about sealed the deal to convert me with this one.
Low and behold, my wireless card simply stops working. The computer behaves like it’s not there. When I flip the wireless switch on the laptop to off, the light stays blue (it needs to be red when off), when I switch it on, it stays blue. Basically, the switch does nothing. What else, device manager is unable to see the wireless adapter even when I switch on the hidden device view. Btw, I’m running Windows Vista Business.
Tried the latest wireless driver, no use. Spoke to a monkey on HP chat, still no use. Hp’s only solution? Send in the laptop for a motherboard replacement. They won’t even send me a damn motherboard to I can replace it myself. Apparently it’s too difficult. What mullarki!
With the research I’ve done, it seems like an update to the Nvidia chipset or the graphics driver MAY solves the issue, so I’m going to give that a shot. If not, some suggest restoring the laptop back to XP Media Center may resolve the issue. In either case, I’m going to try this out and see if it works.
This may be a hopeless cause, since you have to be in the US to employ the HP warranty. Outside the US, my shit is worth more than HP warranty, especially here in Pakistan. See who else is ranting about terrible HP support and the bizaare disappearing of the Wireless Broadcom device in HP laptops here @ http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=1104931&admit=-682735245+1177447268014+28353475.

Problem Solved. I updated/re-installed the Nvidia Geforce Go 6150 driver that HP Update provides, NOT THE ONE on the HP site for the laptop, and the wireless card was rediscovered, the driver installed, and now I’m connecting using it. How interesting! Read this HP! Losers!
May 9th, 2007 at 6:06 am
Asif, my HP Update doesn’t provide any update for geforce… where can I find this update for my notebook?
Ps.: I unistalled the nvidia driver and tried the broadcom software again, but nothing happened.
May 9th, 2007 at 4:00 pm
Which laptop do you have? And are you using Vista or XP? My driver version is 7.15.10.9759 from 1/17/1007. Are you using a dv2120us? Let me know exactly what model, and we’ll try and hunt down a driver for you.
May 14th, 2007 at 3:54 pm
hi, I have the same problem since 2 days…tried all that with HP chat…nothing worked…pc recovery with desctructive mode also dint help. Mine is dv6000 with XP media center….any help would be greatly appreciated….already lost whole my weekend troubleshooting this…and same here…im also outside US n hence no use of warranty.
Should I also try looking for geforce driver and do the same………thanks for quick reply…

Suresh,
The wireless card disappearance problem seems dominant in all HP dv series laptops. Not only that, it seems like the issue is not restricted to the Windows OS, but also comes up in Linux and Ubuntu. Only common ground we have is that it’s only after a certain OS update that the card starts to malfunction. I have been unable to isolate which update that is, but it works before I update win XP with the 78 updates that come up after SP2. One of those suckers is the root of all evil.
However, it does seem like there is a hardware defect involved, something that conflicts with a security issue across all OS platforms. The worst part is that HP doesn’t address the issue, even though it has happened to thousands of people. I’m doing some work on getting started for a class action lawsuit, and will post updates on the site, so look out for that.
Now, the geforce driver issue ONLY resolves problems in Windows Vista. It has been useless to me in XP. I just switched back to XP yesterday. The only way the card works, and works once before a reboot is by resetting the bios. Here’s how to do that. Take out the batter and unplug the power to the laptop. Hit the power button and keep it pressed for 30+ seconds. Then, connect the battery and the power again and reboot. The wireless card is detected almost every time you do this routine, but it will most certainly disappear when you reboot.
It’s a disappointing issue, and I want HP to pay for the abyssmal support and lack of quality products. This is like the Ford sales of the inflammatory windshield vipers, and Ford had to set it right. I hope HP has to do the same. Communist Bastards!

Hi, my laptop is a dv6308ca, and I have the geforce go 6150… where can I find a driver update for it? thanks,
May 17th, 2007 at 12:55 pm
Gustavo, What OS are you using?
May 18th, 2007 at 6:13 am
Vista home premium 32…
May 18th, 2007 at 10:08 am
Can I overclock this video board? this geforce sux.. I cant play anything
May 18th, 2007 at 12:16 pm
Gustavo,
Which driver do you have installed currently? Is it the one HP Update provided, or it Windows Update get it for you? Or did you download it off of the driver section on HP.com? Try the downloads section for dv2120us, it has the same video card. It may just be that HP as fucked up all the arrangement of the downloads. The HP Update driver for the video card just mysteriously disappeared. It was a B version of the driver. At least for the 2120us, it is available on the site under vista downloads.
I only attempted to look at the BIOS once to see if we could overclock the card, but didn’t see anything there. Maybe you can search for another utility on the web. I would avoid that though. The laptops already heat up so much, and I’ve had it shut down because of overheating on me several times. If you overclock the Graphic card, you may risk frying stuff inside.

None of these suggestions worked for my HP dv6000. They sent a new card–nothing. I am finally having to send it back in to them. What a mess!
May 22nd, 2007 at 12:42 pm
Jo, sorry to hear nothing worked for you. To be very honest, mine also only works incidentally. If I shut the laptop down for 8 hours and then boot it, the card comes. If it stays open and i reboot, nothing. I guess it is just a hardware defect that has something to do with the PC heating up. My dv2120us was a deal. I guess you always get what you pay for.
May 24th, 2007 at 11:12 pm
I have a dv6000, Turion64×2 2.0 with the 7200go runnin XP. My wireless card started to disappear from device manager about a week ago. at first the bios reset would do the trick, now that is not a guarantee anymore. i am in the US, but HP wants me to sit on the phone with someone who DOES NOT know the first thing about computers and do a full system recovery before they will redeem my warranty. that is unacceptable, i’m not going to recover to its original state when i know its a hardware problem with the broadcom card. i’ve spent too much time getting updates for Warcraft and Windows to just start over, especially when I KNOW a recovery will NOT solve my hardware problem. after researching sites like this, it seems like most people are having to send it in for a motherboard replacement. i use my laptop all day at work and probably 5-6 nights a week at home, so this is very frusterating for me. i’m using an old USB wireless adapter out of frusteration until i can find a week that i don’t need my laptop at work(not going to happen). i’m probably going to have to tell the guy on the phone i’m doing the recovery without actually doing it, i refuse to lose my work for something so stupid. this is my first and last HP i’ll ever own, buyers beware HP is a terrible company to work with.
May 25th, 2007 at 1:21 pm
Dude, I totally agree with what you’re saying. I have three laptops, an HP, a Sony, and a Toshiba. The more I use the other I get to see how sturdy they and how much more solid they feel when you use them.
HP’s customer support is only in the name. It’s not like their customer support actually knows anything technical. That’s what you get for hiring monkeys at USD 10/hour.
It’s probably best to tell them you already tried recovery, it will save you a lot of time. It is a hardware defect, and let’s hope changing the motherboard is a permanent solution. Keep in mind that the motherboard needs to be changed. If they just change the wireless card on the MB, you’ll still have it disappear after a couple of weeks.
May 25th, 2007 at 6:00 pm
HI, I have just had the same problem with my HP Laptop. Its an HP dv 6000 AMD Turion 2.0x, basically the same config as ‘Rated R’,. I want to know where can i obtain the nvidia drivers to solve the problem. I went into PC recovery and have already lost alot of data due to this. I just need some help to bring it back on. My Bluetooth is working, its just the WLAN which has entirely disappeared, when i came to this forum i realised i wasn’t alone in my problem.
May 25th, 2007 at 6:34 pm
My friend, here’s the problem. The HP Update driver is available on hp.com for download, but it really doesn’t solve the problem at all. It’s a temporary fix, that will work for a day or two. The only thing that has worked almost everytime is resetting the bios. Disconnect power and battery and hold down the power button for 30 seconds +. Connect both back and boot, and you should have the card detected.
May 26th, 2007 at 9:35 pm
Hey thanks alot. I haven’t yet tried the fix but will do so immediately. This will solve the problem permanently I hope, because just yesterday after formatting the HD the wireless device appeared but when I rebooted it was gone again, its become quite frustrating. Thanx alot for your fix once again.
June 10th, 2007 at 10:47 am
I have had same problem.
I tried everything such as holdng power button 30 sec, resiting the wireless card, system recovery, farmatting hard drive, replace w/ new wireless card sent by HP and etc.
Very rarely it worked but generally it happened again.
I am really sick and tired. Hp asked me to send my laptop to fix it and it would take 10 to 15 days. And if I want to use express delivery service, the cost will belonging to me.
Ridiculous!!!. I am getting losing my trust on HP. HP used to have excellent technical and
customer service, but feel like not any more. I can’t find HP return policy. Not sure yet, but
most likely I might never buy or recommand HP products.
My laptop was purchased last Dec. I am wondering what is the return policy!!
June 10th, 2007 at 1:39 pm
I agree with you. I won’t be recommending HP to anyone. Truth is, HP has fallen down in customer sand tech support dramatically, and they really have no return policy that lasts 6 months. We need to gulp this one down; in fact, I’m writing an article on the 10 reasons to NOT buy an HP.
June 13th, 2007 at 8:00 pm
Well my problem continued, I tried the holding down the power buton fix and et all, but nothing seems to wrok. The problem disappears only to reappear the next time I start up. The HP service centre here has agreed to replace the motherboard since my laptop was still under warranty. I am hoping this solves the issue. I have met a few other people who are facing similar hardware issues, one lady told me that only 20 days after buying the laptop a dv2000 series, the motherboard was gone. it would be intresting to read the article..
June 13th, 2007 at 8:02 pm
The article is complete. It’s posted on the front page.
July 15th, 2007 at 7:48 am
Im having the same probs with the wireless card and some bootup probs, sometimes it doesnt even boot up the bios, it just stays at a black screen, ive done everything you can think of, i also used system recovery to set it back to factory settings, and nothing works, i have the same model number, dv2120us
July 15th, 2007 at 12:23 pm
Okay, I’ve sent my laptop to hp for repair. It’s been 8 days and they keep sending emails that they won’t make their 3-5 day deadline. I don’t think they know what the hell is wrong with the laptops, but they’re giving it everything.
I also had the staying at black screen issue, and at that point i stopped wasting time with it and sent it to the US with someone.
July 15th, 2007 at 8:43 pm
Tell me how it turns out, im hoping to send it to HP so they cacn fix it, but im going on vacation in a week.
July 15th, 2007 at 11:16 pm
I’d sent it anyway if it’s under warranty; they gotta fix it or they’ll replace it. They’ll probably replace the board, and probably with something different from the original; although that may not solve the problem. The biggest problem is the excessive heat that it produces; you can probably boil water on a dv2120us that’s been running for a couple of hours.
July 18th, 2007 at 5:37 am
yeah at first i thought the heat was normal because after all it is a laptop but sometimes when u feel the bottom i think its way too hot.
August 1st, 2007 at 1:47 am
Stuck with the same problem I will try the drivers update and bios rest , finger crossed!! I have dv6000 also, has anyone installing Linux on it?????????? I have tried 3 different distro nothing seems to work…although they work fine with VMware….
March 17th, 2008 at 11:10 am
Hello Asif,
I just started having the same problem… I have the dv6000 series, but specifically the dv6470us. I spent an hour and a half on the phone, reset the bios and eventually got the device showing again. After rebooting and coming back to use it the following day, the device was gone again. Now, the bios reset won’t even refresh it. Perhaps I’ll have to do the full reset with power disconnected and all. I see there have not been any post on here since 8/1/07 and I was wondering what the outcome was after you got yours back. Has anyone found a fix that works? Thanks,
Atilla
March 17th, 2008 at 12:54 pm
There hasn’t been a new opost here Atilla because HP concluded, from their own mouth, that the hardware was defective, and that Broadcom was having trouble fixing it too. The solution was to get a replacement. You can try BIOS upgrades or downgrades, resetting by removing the battery and holding down the power button for 10 seconds etc. etc., but in the end, the card will keep disappearing. Defective hardware means there is only one solution: replacement.
March 18th, 2008 at 9:35 am
thanks… I was just hoping that I would not have to deal with sending the unit in. What was the turn around time? Has the new hardware been ok so far? Thanks
March 18th, 2008 at 12:10 pm
I’m afriad that the turnarund time was horrid. They took just about three months, and even then they sent it because I had threatened to sue. They kept telling me the parts were on ETA, and they didn’t get there for over a month. Then after I threatened, they sent me a new laptop, dv2000 series, but newer model. And you have to talk to a support manager out of Palo Alto for that. The monkeys you get from customer service are pretty useless; you’ve got argue through them and speak to a manager.
The new laptop is fine. It’s a dv2415us, and except for a couple of quirks, like the screen going black and staying there when running on battery mode, it’s not so bad.
March 22nd, 2008 at 12:00 am
I have the exact same problem as everyone here. I bought a DV6000 series in Japan last June and about a month ago the wireless card stopped showing up.
After a month of conversations on the phone they a service rep told me that they acknowledge my problem but that because I don’t have an American or a Japanese address I can’t get any service.
When I complained and told them that I had a global warranty, they told me that tech support was global but service wasn’t. That is shocking to me.
March 23rd, 2008 at 11:26 pm
I have an HP dv6208nr laptop and I’ve been having the disappearing wireless card probelm. I tried all of the solutions in this forum and others and eventually ended up sending in the laptop for repair. The process took a bit less than 2 weeks and I got my laptop back and it worked perfectly for a few months until the HP update appeared on my screen with a bios update. I updated the bios and soon afterwards the wireless problem started all over again. When I got my laptop back from being repaired there was no sort of paperwork or anything stating what repair work had been done but I assume they replaced the motherboard. So, to anyone planning on sending their laptop to HP to repair the wireless problem I’d suggest not doing any sort of bios updates once they get it back or the wireless problem will most likely start all over again. I gave up on the situation and ended up buying a wireless usb dongle which sovles the problem for me and ended my headache with it all.
March 23rd, 2008 at 11:49 pm
It would be interesting to find out exactly what hp did with your laptop mark.
I know just buying a USB wireless card is worth it, but it is uncomfortable to use with a laptop, and HP plain cheated everyone they sold defective stuff too.
I got a replacement, but the grief and delays I had to go through with HP is not worth anything. They should be shunned.
I think they’re only good for printers, but I’m not even buying those from hp anymore as a protest. A company that continuously lies to their customers will not do well for very long.
March 24th, 2008 at 7:01 am
I agree Asif, HP should be shunned! I also purchased a 4385 printer and it has a few problems of it’s own working wirelessly with my laptop. It’s passable though. After that, I don’t plan on purchasing anything HP again. I got a usb adapter from Wal Mart that swivels and rotates and it helps a bit with placing the wireless usb dongle out of the way on my laptop. Still a bit uncomfortable like you said though.
March 24th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
Yeah, they’ve simply compromised quality for price.
I had to get a Laser Multifunction Device for my office last week, and in the past I’ve gone for a Samsung SCX 4521F, but I had a hard time finding it now, so I ordered a Lexmark X340 instead. The HPs were tempting, but then I’ve almost boycott HP purchases.
The software that comes with their printers also runs very heavy. I’ve never used a Lexmark before, so it’s a first for me. But the Samsung was a wonderful piece of equipment, a must for any small business.
March 25th, 2008 at 9:05 am
Could Roxio be causing the wireless malfunction? A few days ago I uninstalled everything Roxio that was on my dv6208nr laptop because I never used it. Afterwards, I noticed that the built in wireless was working again so I removed the wireless USB dongle that I had been using. I then decided to create some system recovery discs and kept getting an error that my laptop didn’t have a drive capable of cd or dvd burning. I researched that online and discovered that removing Roxio on some HP laptops could cause the recovery disc creation to not work. I then reinstalled Roxio to create my recovery discs and when I did the built in wireless stopped working again. After creating the recovery discs, I uninstalled Roxio again, rebooted and the built in wireless is working fine again. I’m going to try multiple reboots, sleeps, and hibernations to see if the built in wireless continues to work and I’ll report back tomorrow evening or nite.
March 26th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
That’s a first. If Roxio is causing it, well, I really don’t know what to say.
It’s interesting that Roxio is also the source of drive discovery. More interesting, the recovery disc procedure works, but what you need to try and see is whether you can actually restore from the recovery discs.
That’s another problem; several laptops fail to restore, even when you order the recovery discs from hp.com.
Let us know Roxio really is the cause for your dv6208nr. Maybe we should inform the prodigal staff at HP.
March 26th, 2008 at 6:48 pm
So far, after uninstalling Roxio again, the built in wireless is still working. Even after putting my laptop to sleep and hibernation multiple times and multiple reboots. Ad far as I’ve been able to determine everything else works fine with Roxio uninstalled except for recovery disc creation. The cd/dvd drive works as normal with everything else. Maybe the recovery disc creator software used the burn enging from Roxio or something? Not sure. Roxio came preinstalled on my dv6208nr and I can install it anytime fromt he recovery parition of the hard drive. When I get the time I’m going to install Roxio one more time to see if the wireless malfunctions and then uninstall to see if that corrects it for the third time. The only thing is my laptop worked fine for months when I first bought it and Roxio was installed and it also worked fine for months after I got it back from HP for repair with Roxio until I updated the bios to the latest version. After the bios update, the wireless only seems to work with Roxio uninstalled. I’d also like to point out that the built in wireless has worked with Roxio installed but very rarely and it usually malfunctions after every sleep, hibernation or reboot but without Roxio it’s been working fine since Monday evening.

Hello Asif, I have a dv6000 special edition and i am suffering from the same prob with my wireless. could you tell me were i could find the nvidia update to fix it … thanks a bunch
March 27th, 2008 at 3:12 am
Mark, that’s definitely very interesting. If you see any inconsistency in that conclusion, please be sure to post it, so we know. Let us hope that HP can see this and get their shit together, athlough given their track record i don’t see that happening.
Brett, the nvidia update doesn’t solve the problem. Read Mark’s post. He also has a dv6000. Apparently uninstalling Roxio solves the missing broadcom wireless adapter problem with the hp paviliion dv series. Well, with the dv6000 anyway.
April 11th, 2008 at 11:49 pm
HI, I have the same problem the wireless card disapear, and I cant find the solution, but I don´t know something, The problem is Hardware or is operating system ? I mean if use Windos Vista the problem will be over
April 12th, 2008 at 10:40 am
The problem is hardware, and possibly incompatibility with Roxio that comes pre installed on the laptop. Remove Roxio and see if that helps.
April 21st, 2008 at 9:44 pm
Hi guys, I hate HP! I bought my dv6308nr in Brazil but it is a refurbished only sold in US, so I couldn’t bought a warranty extension (cause I hadn’t a US address and credit card). Sucks, just sucks! Now.. I restart my note and my wireless card was gone! Oh no.. never .. I never won’t buy HP notes again!
I will try your advices but my BIOS has a tip that is a hardware problem: the boot order menu puts a “!” (exclamation) on “network card booting” option ! This seems bad, very bad. At last I will try remove and reconnect the minipci card. God bless myself !!
April 21st, 2008 at 11:51 pm
hi again..
I found this: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?docname=c01087277&dlc=en&lc=en&cc=us
HP knows the problem but I don’t know if this will help me cause of I live in Brazil but my notebook is a US model.. anyway.. this link above seems helpful for some people
April 22nd, 2008 at 7:24 am
HP has been aware of the problem for over a year. They sold defective units on several levels; some with defective motherboards, others with defective LAN cards, and yet some more with defective inverters. The lesson here is simple: Don’t buy from Hewlett Packard.
Only one of these defective type units is covered under this new program.
May 14th, 2008 at 3:27 am
hi i also am having a problem with Dv6208nr with the wireless deal
May 18th, 2008 at 6:46 pm
I am having the same problem… not visible in device manager, linux etc. anymore.
will try the battery&power off trick
then maybe the bios update, involuntary
May 18th, 2008 at 8:16 pm
ok I got partially successful, thought I might share it with you guys.
1. BIOS update -> F3D
-> no change at all, still dead
2. Power off, No battery pack attached, no power cord, wait 5 mins, hold POWER for 15 secs, Attach power cord/battery. start windows.
-> after login in windows, the damn wlan LED turns finally blue again.
However I will call HP tomorrow and eventually drive to HP myself to change the mainboard, as I know my laptop is a ticking timebomb and I cant aford a denial of service whilst being abroad. I even take my windows install cd with me when on a trip, but if the screen doesnt turn on anymore you cant do nothing.
I strongy encourage everyone to do so.
Damn you HP. this laptop was so epensive!!
May 18th, 2008 at 8:33 pm
sorry its me again.
I AM REALLY SICK OF THIS.
I hibernated once and back up.
the led wont go blue.
its still in dvice manager this time, wiwth a yellow warning mark on it (like before until it disappeared completely when desactivatin and enabeling again..)
calling hp tomorrow
May 26th, 2008 at 2:13 pm
hey
i’m using a tablet, tx1003au. same problem, frikkin wifi got jacked! tried it ALL. including xp. read forums for a week! got so bugged, donno wot to do.
any suggestions?
May 28th, 2008 at 11:42 am
Uninstall roxio and see if you have any luck. Or contact HP and shout at them. It helps with the frustration, but beware, it does not solve the problem.
June 11th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
I just got this with my HP dv6111eu. Wonderful. I was confused as the Broadcom adapter “disappeared” as I was just removing NM-applet in Ubuntu and replacing it with Wicd. But it sooned dawned on me that the Broadcom-adapter didn’t even turn up using lspci anymore!
Strange however how it can just disappear all of a sudden, after a year (bought the laptop used, so maybe 1,5 years) of working normally!
I’ve worked at installing the BIOS-update using Dosemu/Freedos/Phlash1614 but it doesn’t work. WINE can’t handle Winphlash either :-/
June 26th, 2008 at 10:36 am
I’ve got the same problem. But fixed it. I’ve got a tx1210au from HP and the issue is that one of the Windows Vista updates of recent time kills the WLAN driver. So I threw all my necassary files to my external harddrive and formatted the system. Worked for a little while, but when windows started to install the updates automatically again, the problem reared its ugly head again.
Now I’ve set Windows Update to only install when I want something updated. I also deinstalled the normal Windows updates but kept the security updates and my wireless networking now works once more. Hurray!

July 6th, 2008 at 8:30 am
Alex,
I’m afraid many of us have tried what you’ve tried, and we were all frustrated. Note that HP has agreed in the past that that the devices are defective, and if you use the link to the hp forum dealing with this issue (it’s floating around somewhere on one of these pages), I believe they made a post to the effect of fixing the machines free of cost, but only for their US Customer Base.
So, the rest of the world is basically, well, fucked.
Try uninstalling Roxio from your notebook if you have it installed. That typically helps for a few days. There is no pemanent fix for this. You simply need to get your laptop fixed or replaced, because as such, there is no soft fix for defective hardware, which hp is guilty of having sold.
I’m thinking, shall we launch a forum to the effect of hpsucks.com, accumulate content, and then take hp to court in europe?
July 10th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
Same thing happening here with a Tablet PC from HP - one day it’s all good (very hot, but good), the next it’s all bad. No wireless card.
It happened after I updated the NDVIA drivers and BIOS from the HP site. Just a coincidence? A few Vista updates came down at the same time.
system restore does not work. reinstalling the broadcom drivers does not work. uninstalling them and then turning off/on seems to work though.
And yep, my laptop is stupidly hot (80 degrees celcius!).
I’ve contacted HP, and am about to reinstall NDVIDIA drivers again. If something good happens, I’ll repost.

Best of luck!

Dont want to bore you guys by being yet another victim of the HP wireless farce, but my dv6116eu unit is seeing the same issues (in fact not intermittent, just plain dead - amber light always on) I have also lost my video on a number of occassions and that seems to come and go as it pleases.
I live in England so am not covered by the extended warranty period offered in the US. So my plan is to take the damn thing apart and see if I can spot some dry soldering or some heat damage to soldering. A new mobo is clearly the perm fix, but let’s face it, this is just lump changing and not engineering. I will let you know of the outcome, but it’s very possible that some solder damage exists somewhere and a simple touch up may solve the problem. I’m particularly interested in the heat claims that some people have been making. Hot components can weaken soldering in time and a lot of these cases sound like degradation.
August 5th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
Same for my DV6258SE and I too have tried it all. I sent my unit back to HP in Nov 2007 and they replaced thge mobo and its thermal heat pad. Now 7 months later the exact same problem — the orange light from hell. Not in DM and interminently re-appears…but most of the time it is organe. Heat is probably the real issue here, as my unit can fry eggs sometimes. If I caan get the fan to run constantly, as in running a backup to an external harddrive, after a while the blue light comes on — meaning it cools the connections to make the wirless card work for a while — but as soon as I put it in sleep mode and try to get it back, it stay orange — also HP wireless assistant won’t launch……if this happens again, I’m moving to an usb wireless solution.
August 7th, 2008 at 6:53 am
Here’s another victim. If HP acknowledges that they sold defective hardware in the US, would they acknowledge that they sold defective hardware all around the world as well? I live in Canada, and that replacement wouldn’t cover me. Even then, I bought the laptop second hand, all of a sudden one morning the wireless card stopped working. I have a dv6307ca. I will attempt to uninstall Roxio software and go through the other temporary measures.
My laptop gets really hot too.
August 7th, 2008 at 9:20 am
It’s just a bad product by a bad company. The reason they won’t admit it elsewhere is that they don’t have to. They don’t have a choice in the US.
Try buying a laptop stand with a built in fan; that really does help. It keeps the laptop cooler, thereby preventing the danger of more malfunctions caused by excessive heat.
August 14th, 2008 at 11:39 pm
I just now got off the phone with HP from the phone number provided by the hyperlink on this site. The first attempt was a dismal failure wile speaking to someone from India (I assume) she wanted to charge me $99 for a one year warranty extension or a $50 on time fee which I declined (good choice HP is now doing this free!). After about an hour on the phone with this lady from Bombay I got so fed up I told her to F**K herself and hung up. This might not have been a good idea but when she told me to go to my ISP or to HP.com for help, I lost it in her sea of stupidity.
My laptop has been out of warranty since April but HP is going to take in my laptop replace the wireless broadcom card and the motherboard. I am reformatting the hard drive and HP is going to install Vista Home premium. Basically I am getting a new DV6208nr laptop. I am excited, but the HP tech (if you want to call them that.) said HP has identified the problem as an overheating issue and HP recommends a notebook chiller. Obviously HP didn’t research enough when they designed this unit and the coolers are ineffective.
August 15th, 2008 at 7:15 am
i am another hp victim. tho i have a tablet, hp pavilion tx 1000. read a lot of useful things on this site, tho of all the things that i tried (nvidia, roxio) none worked. i didn’t do the bios thing, i doubt it would work permanently. fuck hp, this is all going to come out of my warrantless pocket. i can’t believe they would sell shit that they knew had problems. all this happened right after another one of vista updates. i don’t even have a vista cd. instead of giving you a cd, they give you some back-up partition that i accidently got rid of.
as one final shot, i’m going to do the formatting thing that one of the users above did. after that i’m calling hp, if i ever buy another laptop, it’s not going to be an hp.
August 18th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
I am also experiencing the same problem with HP dv2000.
tried to run system recovery to turn back to factory settings but it didn’t work. if it was a software problem it should have worked.
I will never ever buy HP again.
August 23rd, 2008 at 1:13 pm
I was using HP Pavilion dv 6226us for quite some time, evrthing was working fine til the time i did systesm recovery. Now the wireless light is always blue .Though wireless is working , but i want this switch to work .chated with hp support , but nothing worked.where will i get this Nividia update ?
August 26th, 2008 at 8:58 am
Weel, I just read this by incident..
I have Broadcom wireless card, and experience same issue…
The funny thing is my lap is an Acer Travelmate 230 and I am running Xp and Debian linux in dual-boot….
I experience this problem in XP, not in Linux, thought I´ve found it too using some linux live CDs (probably becouse they use ndiswrapper, that´s some soft that “wraps”(sorry) original Window$ drivers on a layer of sotware, so linux can understand it (this is used sometimes with very new drivers or devices that are not supported in linux..
Would like more…
August 27th, 2008 at 4:09 am
I am currently sitting with HP on the phone! My wireless card has completely disappeared. I tried downloading the BIOS and Wireless drivers from HP.com. Shit did NOT work! this is soo frustrating I wish I had seen the website before I bought the damn laptop a year ago!
September 3rd, 2008 at 4:33 am
hi all,
basically i’ve gone through almost every blog available online and tried the sbut nothing works. the way it ends is slowly the mother board dies and the computer is just dead, however im not at that stage yet, but i know soon that will happen. so im selling my laptop on cash for laptops for 400$$. if u want hp to replace the motherboard or anything else.. trust me all are temporary fixes..nothing is a permanent fix. trust me it is not a software issue. it has something to do with hardware incompatibality.
anyways my suggestion get rid of hp asap and never buy again; and if u started a blog on their help website, hp controls those blogs and deletes whatever they want from those blogs, im saying that from personal experience.
enjoy
September 6th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
Me too
HP Pavilion dv6154eu (dv6000 series)
After 1.5 year already dead:
1. integrated microphone
2. integrated speakers
3. power button (I can only power-on notebook by DVD soft-button)
4. broadcom wireless adapter (just disappeared from device manager)
If I ever buy HP notebook it will be the 5-year warranty product, not less
September 10th, 2008 at 2:04 am
i have the same problem..i discovery that is a fucky problems with the atheros wifi card (mostly a Sony bio Laptop) a considence??? … if there any atheros wifi card near of your laptop … the broadcom stop working… the only way that i found to fixed its to get away from the atheros wifi card and restar the system… and by magic act… the broadcoam start to work again… the same thing for any OS ( vista,XP, Linux and Mac OS)…. its incredible that HP, Broadcom and atheros company dont do nothing to fix that problems… most amazing they even said nothing… like its some one else fault… its like some kind of company wars…who only wants to fuck the costumers… i hope this info works for some else… cheers
September 10th, 2008 at 11:13 pm
Same problem developed in my tx1200us last night. Rebooted and it was fine. Today it is gone. I am housebound and live alone in England so cannot take it back to hp or send it in anymore than I can be without the internet safely so this is critical for me. Fortunately I was sent a usb wireless device and driver with my router so I dug that out and managed to get online with that. Google then brought be here only to find out that the problem seems more terminal than I had hoped.
Have just uninstalled all variants of Roxio software and can only hope that tomorrow (I dare not go offline tonight to test it!) I will find this has worked but I. like everyone else, can no longer trust hp. This laptop is just over 8 months old and from the US but bought while I was visiting there and I will not be back there until after the year. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
September 13th, 2008 at 7:22 am
I have the dv6324 laptop, wireless went dead. followed the above link to the HP support page. I called them and they sent out a pre-paid box within a few days. sent it to them on monday of this week, got it back today, friday. Works great now with the new motherboard. All free of charge, and this after the waranty had expired. Must give credit to HP in my case they were excellent!
September 29th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
I have this broadcom problem. For two or three days we will work for my connection then tomorrow it will not work again. It is like troublesome issue to solve here. How to make it permanently works forever? By the way, I am using HP Pavilion tx1002au. Window Vista Home Premium. Tablet Laptop. please help me to solve the problem, thank you
September 29th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
Hi Jacky,
Only permanent way to get this to work is to buy an external USB wireless card. Unfortunately, there is no cure for defective hardware.
September 30th, 2008 at 3:23 am
Hi Asif, I forget to mention my laptop is not my main adminstator. My PC is the main admin, which come with Router for many user to connect in, Linksys 2.4 GHz 802.11b Wireless USB Network Adapter. For my laptop, I still need to buy what type of external USB wireless card? same as my main PC? tell me as soon as possible. thank you very much.
October 3rd, 2008 at 6:09 am
It doesn’t matter if the wireless card is the same. It just needs to be a wireless card that supports a 2.4 Ghz 802.11b connection, which almost all of them do now.
October 11th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
had same problem with HP 2416 running Vista home premium. no wireless hardware detected.
went to Nvidia web site downloaded the 178.13 video drivers to desktop
launched the exe, the installer could not find compatable hardware, however when I rebooted the PC the green wireless light came on and works fine.
October 12th, 2008 at 11:53 pm
My HP dv9000z using Vista Home Premium has the same broadcomm wireless problem now and then.
Solution works for me:
1. With laptop running and wireless button in “on” position, press and hold down the power button until the laptop shuts off completely.
2. Press the power button again to restart.
3. Start Windows normally.
4. Taa-daa!
October 18th, 2008 at 11:04 pm
have the same problem with a model tx1200 too.
disappeared after working well for a year or so, anyone with idea how to fix this? I re-install broadcom wireless 802.11 driver and not seem to cure. Will that work if the GeForce Go6150 is re-installed?
October 20th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
Unfortunately, Vic, the answer is no.
October 21st, 2008 at 6:16 pm
Hi Asif, I’m another HP victim - wireless card in my HP dv6305us suddenly disappeared. Laptop is one year old. It doesn’t have recovery partition - I erased all disk by zero-formatting a long time ago and installed XP and ubuntu. I don’t have roxio software, wireless disappeared after one of the XP updates a month ago, moreover linux also can’t find wireless card anymore. I tried bios resetting by removing battery and holding power button, it helps occasionally.
I bought wireless usb dongle from d-link, it works fine, but it sticks out from hp box and can easily be broken.
October 23rd, 2008 at 3:26 pm
I worked on a buddies HP DV9000 (9010) with the disappearing broadcom wireless problem. It is running Vista premium.
A little trick I have found to make it work while only temporary, is to go to performance and maintance then choose the “experience index” option and the message “new hardware” is listed at the begining on top. I start the “experience index test and 1/3 of the way through the wireless turns blue and starts working.
I then cancel the test and proceed with my web browsing. This only works until the computer is restarted and then it has to be repeated all over again but it does make it work every time.
HP sucks and won’t replace the board because the model isn’t listed as having problems and is out of warranty. I am located in the states too. I advised my buddie to just buy usb wireless (linksys, ect) to skip the hassles. My advice to him is never buy HP (H alf P erformance)
October 26th, 2008 at 7:06 am
Hi all,
Here are my 2 cents. Crap story about a crap laptop.
I bought a hp dv6189eu in November 2006.
- In October 2007 (~1 year) the wireless was gone.
The motherboard was changed (22 days in service).
- After only 26 days the wireless was gone again!
The motherboard was changed again (94 days in service).
- After ~1 year in October 2008 the wireless was gone AGAIN!
The moderboard was replaced once again (7 days in service).
In total since I have the laptop it was for 14.58% of the time in service!
This time they replaced the bios with F.40 which is not even available from
the hp site. Way to go HP: obscure and fuzzy!
And what is really crappy is that my model is not in the list of the ones granted a free repair :))
I asked the guy at the store (OnOff Sweden) how can I be sure they fixed the problem this time if they got the other 2 times wrong? And also my warranty (2 years) goes away in 1 month and as far as I know about this computer it will break in about 333 days. What then?
And I told them that if the SAME problem appears 3 time I should get my money back according to the law. The guy said that he needs to speak with his supervisor which handles the counter right now. I talk with the super guy and he tells me that it needs to be broken 4 times for the same problem to be changed (or refunded). I told him to show me the law. He seaches for about half an hour, then he tells me he needs to take care of the line formed after me. I said I have time to waste, go ahead.
After a while he’s replaced from the counter and tells me he’ll go to his office and search for the papers. I wait for about 1 hour (during this time I see other 2-3 OnOff guys searching on computers… they super guy called them from his office).
He comes back stressed and tells me he didn’t find the papers but he talked with a collegue which might know where they are. Was he for real??!! What kind of “proffesional” answer is that??!! He told me he will give me a call in 3 days after he gets some more info. Yeah right, we’ll see.
I need to point out that Sweden is a bit different from the States, some things are better, some are worse. I’m really curious how the guys at OnOff will handle this.
Funny
or maybe not!
Cheers,
za-k/

I have had a good read through comments and am still unable to activate the wireless. The drivers are showing in the device manager and the software broadcom 801.11. is apparent in the software programmes listings but not under the programmes menu. I have sweet FA from HP monkeys. Please advise. I have reinstalled the drivers.
Thanks
October 31st, 2008 at 11:42 pm
Sorry HPDV600
October 31st, 2008 at 11:50 pm
Wait, you’re seeing it under device manager? if you’re seeing it under device manager the hardware is being detected. What’s the problem at your end?
November 2nd, 2008 at 4:08 pm
Hi, I live in the US and bought my laptop in June of 2007. Does that mean it’s still covered by an extended warranty so I can fix this stupid motherboard for free? It only says 1 year warranty on the bottom of the computer, but I keep seeing things about a 24 month one.
November 3rd, 2008 at 10:48 pm
sorry for not coming back sooner. I can not see the broadcom under d.m. but in software the wireless driver is not working can you advise where to re obtain drivers for such laptop. By the way you have a great site.
Sak
November 3rd, 2008 at 10:49 pm
See one thing is the network devices the other id the broadcom wireless card?
November 4th, 2008 at 12:41 am
Hi Kaitlyn,
Try this URL to find out about your warranty: http://www11.itrc.hp.com/service/ewarranty/warrantyInput.do?admit=109447626+1225755656787+28353475
November 4th, 2008 at 12:46 am
Sak,
Under network devices you will see your Hardwire network card and you may see the broadcom card or a wireless network device. If you see the network device, you can go to hp.com and get the driver. If you don’t see the network device, you need to tell hp to send you a new laptop.
November 4th, 2008 at 1:30 am
Hi all,
Im from good old NZ and am having the same problems. compaq presario F551AU running vista basic home. Driver disappeared, got it back and now gone again. I have read so many web sites and am just getting so confused. Is there another driver I can download or do I have to stay with broadcom??!!
November 4th, 2008 at 10:59 pm
Nicola,
No driver will solve the problem. The solution is to buy a USB wireless network card.
November 4th, 2008 at 11:01 pm
And that card can be any brand. It does not need to be broadcom.
November 10th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
Hey all,
Im another victim of this HP crisis. Ive had my laptop for about half a year now and the broadcom driver (after some automatic updates) showed up missing under network adapters. Ive called HP several times each time they make me preform the same routine..system restore..taking the card out putting it back in…and taking the battery out and holding the power button for 30 sec..etc..it has yet to turn back to its normal color of blue. It just stays orange. The wireless assistant program is working either. I finally called them the other day and forced them to take my laptop in for repair saying of done everything possible because nothing has worked. They are..ill let you guy in on anything that happens after they fix it. Or if I can get them to tell me what the exact problem is. My laptop is a tablet not sure of the exact model..i think tc something. Anyways if anyone has any tips of what I can try please let me know..hopefully it will be fixed for good once i get it back but after reading all of these posts i dont think this is going to happen.
November 13th, 2008 at 3:34 am
i live in canada how do i get to HP and talk to them to f@#king fix my wireless shit or replace it.??
November 14th, 2008 at 7:48 pm
You’ll have to start online just like the rest of us Phil. Then when you escalate the issue, they will probably assign an account manager to you. Don’t know if they’ll ship it to Canada though; you may have to get someone in the US to do it for you. I don’t recall if the US warranty covers North America or the US only.
November 14th, 2008 at 7:49 pm
Dee,
Chances are it won’t be fixed, but if it’s still under warranty they may replace the machine. The other solution is just to be an external 802.11G card; it’s less heart ache and worth the $ 10.00.
November 26th, 2008 at 3:59 am
Wow, I’m not alone. I have a Tx1320US that is under warranty. The DM is missing the broadcom….HP sent me a new wireless card…..that didn’t resolve the issue. Now they are wanting me to send the unit in for a motherboard replacement, is this going to solve my issue?
November 29th, 2008 at 5:34 pm
I’ve had the same problem on my HP tx-1215nr and am really annoyed because I know there is nothing wrong with the wireless device because IT WORKS every time I reload my original software (System Recovery). But, it takes too much work and too many updates to do and too many other software to reload and files to restore and the solution is temporary. I am really wondering why there still is no solution to the problem. Are the people at HP just ignoring this problem as if it doesn’t exist when obviously there are too many complaints of the same problem. Did we not pay for our computers? Is there no proper after sales support.
I have come across some complaints saying that the problem appears right before the warranty expires or right after it expires. Could this be considered HP Wireless Adapter Virus which is triggered on by the warranty, so that after the warranty expires, you have to buy a new laptop or spend a lot on a motherboard replacement?
I’m sure it is software because a hardware problem cannot be solved by just reloading the original software and in my case, the WLAN adapter never failed to come alive again after I reload the original software. And only after applying updates to the software does the problem reappear.
Well, thanks to the solution I found through various fora, I don’t have the problem anymore and that’s because I bought a USB Wireless Network Adapter!
But, my goodness, is that how the problem should be solved? Buy a new hardware, at your expense, to replace one that you paid for but is not being recognized anymore by the updated software.
How come this problem, so common to HP laptops, is not included in laptop reviews. I believe it’s but proper that people intending to buy HP laptops should be warned that this problem exists in many HP laptop models. Could we say that people doing laptop reviews are also guilty, by omission of dishonesty, when the problem is a known fact but the buying public is not being warned. _)!*)*@$!
So, I advise all who have this problem to accept the fact that no one at HP cares about this problem and it may never be solved anymore for your laptops. Just go out and buy yourself a USB Wireless Network Adaptor and relieve yourself of the anger and frustations brought about by your _)!*)*@$! HP product.
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:57 am
Hi All,
Well it looks like all of you guys have a hate on for HP. Well add me to the frickin’ list. I bought a dv9310ca for my daughter for university and it worked great for over a year and then the wireless adapter went MIA. I have tried a lot of things, but nothing permanently works. Since the laptop does not have any available slots, I think I will purchase a USB wireless adapter because she can’t afford the downtime. I’m still going to find someone to complain to at HP, but I expect they don’t give a shit. Besides, I already pissed enough at them because they bought the company I work for and I expect I may lose my job.
HP *&@$# SUCKS!!!
Merry Christmas to those of you who celebrate it
December 11th, 2008 at 5:06 am
Well same think happened to our HP dv6000 today. Installed some updates that came down from Microsoft and then the Broadcom networking card is no longer recognized. I don’t understand how it can be a hardware issue if a software change triggered it?
We use a chill mat all the time with the laptop, so I din’t see how heat could be the problem, though it still gets a little hot, but can’t be as hot if we didn’t use the chill mat.
Just wieghing my options now. Call HP or just buy a USB wireless adapter. For those that went the extended waranty route, when you called HP did you have to go through all the rest of the crap about resroring and trying all the other crazy stuff for them to diagnoze it, or were you able to just explain the problem and have them send you the prepaid mailer?
December 12th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
You have to go through the whole routine before they’ll give you the prepaid mailer. If you still have warranty, I’d certainly go that route. If not, easier to get a USD wireless adapter.
December 13th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
Well, I sent my tx1230 in on Monday for a motherboard change out. I’ll let you know what happens when I get it back. Yes, I did have to jump through hoops, but I’m under an extended warranty.
December 13th, 2008 at 5:15 pm
I have a DV6000 series and my Broadcom Wireless has just disappeared. I have tried a number of the fixes listed on here (thanks to all who provided them) to no avail. Currently on HP live chat support and I’m getting nowhere. They advised me to install the drivers and restart, and said they cannot help beyond that. I told them that was unacceptable and they are now telling me that I need to reseat the device. They sent me a link, which does not work. Brilliant. Then I was logged out of their live chat and I cannot get back in to the active case without re-entering the SN and PN and I cannot be bothered.
What is the deal with BIOS? I don’t know what that is.
I bought the laptop in March 07 in the States and am now living in Australia. It does get ridiculously hot sometimes - if I am using it on my lap it burns my left leg!
Fortunately I have a USB adaptor - that however does nothing to address the actual problem.
Here is a link to a story and loads of other comments http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/183/1032183/hp-admits-wireless-laptop
December 14th, 2008 at 10:10 am
Asif, a question for you. Can I replace the internal device with a new one? I remember I bought one for an older HP which didn’t have it included, but did have space - it just clipped in. I would prefer to do that than continue to work with the USB sticking out.
thanks
December 14th, 2008 at 10:30 am
Rebekah, if you can find an internal device, there’s no reason why you can’t replace it. HP will probably refuse to sell you one. They wouldn’t sell it to me even though the 2120 had a separate internal device.
For some models, though, there really isn’t a separate device since the wireless card is part of the motherboard.
December 14th, 2008 at 5:14 pm
Rebekah, They did send me a new wireless card and I replaced my old one…still didn’t work. That is why they are replacing the motherboard.
December 15th, 2008 at 12:32 pm
Thanks Asif and Scott. It is working again, completely randomly. I tried lots of the suggestions here to no avail, then it started working again when I turned the computer on this morning. I noticed that when it was starting up, it re-installed the broadcom drivers. Very strange. Oh well, I will wait for it to happen again before I take any further action. Thanks again for your suggestions.
Cheers
December 20th, 2008 at 8:24 pm
Well my computer came back with a new motherboard…they told me that they wouldn’t re-image the hard drive…guess what? they did, so I’ve been spending the last three days “fixing” and adding my programs. I did do a back-up before sending it off, but I still have a lot to do. The wireless card is working. Scott
December 21st, 2008 at 10:58 pm
h.aving the same problem as everyone else getting ready to send my dv9000 in for replacement card hoping what i read about turn around isn’t 3 months. tired all aspects of the blog but could not get my card to come back once. wondering if there is any progress about class action suite
any help would be apprec.
December 22nd, 2008 at 5:18 pm
Scott, thanks for the update. Hopefully it will keep working. Let us know if the situation changes.
December 22nd, 2008 at 5:20 pm
mckda,
It was 3 months for me, and that was more than a year and a half ago. I’m sure they’ve improved by now since they have finally admitted the fault.
Regarding the lawsuit, I haven’t had much luck. Since I don’t live in the States anymore, it’s hard to get a lawyer interested, since they are all deadbeats anyway. Besides, hp is still recovering from their defective inverter class action lawsuit.
December 24th, 2008 at 5:22 pm
Hi,
I’ve just bought a DV7-1000 very recently, and my wireless is giving me serious hassle. It connects to my home network fine, with no problems. However as soon as I connect to another network, it connects for a short while and then goes to limitied connectivity. Thereafer the wireless does not work, I press the wirelss button, which stays amber even though vista home premium states its on in a pop up window. When I try to diagnose the problem, vista comes back with your wireless is turned off, even though I’ve pressed the button to turn it on.
I have recovered the machine to its factory settings, it starts working, but again as soon as I connect elsewhere it stops working.
Funnily enough, when my computer booted up it did 47 windows updates, so unsure whether its a hardware or software problem.
Either way im sending the laptop back, but besides that do you have any suggestions?
Thanks
December 24th, 2008 at 7:35 pm
Hi Dipen,
This sounds more like an intermittent problem rather than the wireless card simply not showing up. There should be no reason why it connects to only one network and not to another. Do you have the problem if you delete the home network from your machine and try to configure it again?
In any case, if it goes away once and the light plays up with detection, I suggest sending it in is your best option. In my opinion, it good to try a couple of quick fixes, but wasting too much time on a defective product is useless. After all, as a consumer, you don’t pay money to fix defective stuff, and hp should consider that before they put out stuff in the market.
December 27th, 2008 at 10:25 pm
Thank God I finally discovered what really occurred. My wireless internet device manager disappered and I have a constant orange light instead of blue. Except with my computer hp pavillion dv 6000 running windows xp, I suddenly could no longer use Mozilla/Firefox so I downloaded Safari from IE, and that won’t work either. Do have any idea why or has this happened to others. and how can I fix it? Please prodide the link to fix this problem and not the one from HP that does a bandaid fix.
Thanks so much!
P.S. My DVD player slot started opening on its own once the Wireless device disappeared. What’s up with that?

Hi Maryam,
I’m not sure there’s a cure to the problem you have. Contact hp, go through their mind-numbingly pathetic trouble shoot routine to make them believe the laptop is defective and then send it in for a motherboard replacement. That’s about all you can do.
The CD tray taking on a a life of its own is something new that I haven’t come across before. Please let us know how that turns out.

I friend of mine has a HP DV6125om with XP Media Center.
His laptop has this issue with the Broadcom Wireless card vanishing. I told him to just us a USB wifi card instead and now he is back on the net. Would a different brand of internal wireless card work? Like an Intel 3945ABG, etc.?

Hi its good to know im not alone in this crazyness (no wireless on HP laptop after a year in my case). First of all thx Asif for this site and gathering ppl around one cause (frank and pure hate toward HP and its shit pretending to be computers).
After reading all comments there are only 2 solutions coming to my mind regarding the issue:
1. just stop fooling myself and go to USB device
2. avoid HP shit next time
and regarding HP and their shamefull performance (in all aspects of this issue)
1. by myself a T-shirt with huge “FUCK HP and its lesswireless solutions” statement.
best regards to you Asif and all of you guys on board of this fucking ship called HP.

Hello Asif,
I also have the problem of the broadcom wifi dissappearing. I am running Vista and have an HP Pavilion dv6000. I read you re-installed/updated the Nvidia Geforce Go 6150 driver but when I uninstall it, as soon as I start my computer again, it’s installed again. What can I do?

February 6th, 2009 at 1:35 pm
hey guys, i’ve had this problem for about a month, thoought i’d stupidly changed something i shouldn’t have. I’ve been doing a little digging and it seems the only way to resolve this issue is to get the motherboard replaced. now, i know this may sound like a dumb question but will i need to reinstall all my software if i get a new motherboard????? i’m a bit ignorant when it comes to computer questions
oh yeah, fuck HP. never never ever again
February 7th, 2009 at 3:09 pm
Most likely, yes, unless the Motherboard is identical.
February 8th, 2009 at 9:03 pm
dan dan,
I sent mine in for a new motherboard and HP re-imaged the hard drive, put it back to the way that it was the day that I bought the piece of shit. Even my Vista upgrade to ultimate had to be re-done, and my office, everything. What fun…..

Working on a customer’s HP tx1320us with Vista Home Premium. The wireless adapter has disappeared much like everyone else’s here.
After trying just about every step listed above, I went out on a limb to try something different. I created a second partition on the primary HDD on which I installed Windows XP. After restoring the MBR so Vista would be recognized, I successfully booted in to XP.
After loading a couple of HP drivers as well as the Wireless Assistant, what do you know? The wireless card begins to work. Several successful reboots later and it continues to work flawlessly. So then, I attempt to restart and boot in to Vista. The wireless adapter is suddenly recognized again and is working. How in the hell does that happen? Unfortunately, this was short lived. Knowing it was probably too good to be true, I attempted to restart Vista again to see if the adapter would still be there. It wasn’t. Reboot. Still missing. Booted back in to XP, wireless is missing from there too. So then I reinstalled HP Wireless Assistant (just to try anything), and BAM, wireless begins working again in XP. Several reboots and several hours later, works fine. Boot in to Vista, wireless appears and works. Reboot Vista again, wireless has gone AWOL.
This is quite frustrating. There’s no rhyme or reason why the wireless will work fine under XP, then work once under Vista, and then stop working altogether after rebooting back in to either Vista or XP.

Mate, you’re wasting time. There’s no cure to defective hardware.
February 16th, 2009 at 5:41 pm
I have got the same issues. Wireless what a joke!!
I have spent more time working on this computer to get it to work than work itself. We have sent it off once, got it back it worked about a hour. I am totally disappointed in the headaches this thing has caused.
February 18th, 2009 at 8:19 pm
I am so glad i found this after a year of wasting my time on my piece of sh&t DV6190 - Wireless problem the same as everyone else - disc drive tray opens randomly - believe it or not - the thing has been in for repair for another blue screen/continuing shutdown problem, it came back with the bluetooth not working (still doesn’t) and the wireless problem is worse and worse… HP support are absolutely useless, i have been in contact with 1 guy for 6 months, and simply request him to call back at a time when i’m at home with my laptop and able to connect online - 9-11 times i’ve asked for a call back and NOT ONCE has he called back when requested…this thing has been the bain of my life over the last year…this is a replacement for a previous DV pavilion which terminally packed up (which coincindently was a replacement for my 1st Hp which packed up)…Unbelievably cr*p products through and through - Oh and my HP printer has just broken also…i’m deperatley trying to escalate this at the moment!

My son has a G6000 which we bought in November 2008, the wireless started to fail one month out of warranty. HP have been totally useless. They rolled out the usual rubbish around trying to re-install drivers and going back to defaults. We did try the bios power down routine but that only worked once. We have tried to monitor the failures around length of time the machine has been running etc but no joy. I have to agree th athis looks like some deep laying hardware issue but I am wondering of there has been a Vista release that has caused this. Has anyone tried clearing down the box and doing a fresh Vista install. I have seen the Roxio suggestion before and believe that we have deleted that with no joy. One thing I have noticed is that when the machine was running fine, the wireless card was the first thing to go when the battery was getting low. I just wondered if we have a voltage issue somewhere as well. I will never buy HP again, the support is an utter disgrace. I have emails to show that I was promised a call from a tech resource on 5 occasions and I have 5 apologies because it did not happen. Oh yes and anyone in the UK, HP do not connect the G6000 problems with the DV series even though the problem is identical. I have a mail to say that this is not a known issue in the UK

My problem seems to be the HP Wireless Assistand will not run, and there is no power to the wireless card. I have had the motherboard replaced by HP, but the BIOS hard drive test failed and HP wanted $750 to make repairs. Told them to send it back and they did with at least a new wireless card, maybe a new motherboard. It powered up (Wireless Assistant launched) and all was well. Next boot HP Wireless Assistant refused to launch and no power to wireless card therefore no wireless. Turning the wireless switch off or on makes no difference, stays amber no matter what. Reinstalled almost all versions of HP Wireless Assistant, but none will execute. No power to card, no wireless. Anyone else have this problem?
March 6th, 2009 at 4:52 am
Update: My HP DV6405us just crashed, wrote a houmongus dump file, and rebooted. HP Wireless Assistant launched, powered the wireless card, the light turned blue, and drivers loaded for the wireless card. This update was sent wirelessly. Don’t know how long it will last, but my problem was HP Wireless Assistant not powering the wireless card. That is why the wireless card is not showing up in Device Manager, it is not powered, therefore the computer can not see it.
March 9th, 2009 at 12:25 pm
UPDATE SMALL CLAIM
The claim has been accepted by the local district court,
i do suggest to everyone in the same boat to sue the retailer or HP, u can do it online for 15 euro. Do not give up!!!
I ll keep u updated with the case!

Send the laptop in for replacement, mate.
April 3rd, 2009 at 5:26 pm
Has anyone found a new resolution to this? I have to disagree with the consideration that this is a hardware issue. This card worked for a year in a dv9000 running Vista. Then suddenly stopped. I uninstalled the card (physically) and reinstalled it. It worked again, until a reboot.
This seems to tell me it is not a Hardware issue as some of you suggest, but rather a Software issue which can be resolved.
I have not attempted the drastic action that visakh suggested, and hope not to have to to resolve this.
April 4th, 2009 at 11:07 am
I have a dv6000 with Vista Home Preminu and I have the same problem with my wireless card, it does´nt exist. I removed all Roxio programs but that did´nt help. Then I disconnected power cord and battery and pushed the powerbutton for 30+ seconds. That did the trick for now, but since the card has disappered before, it probobly will again. Also, the computer is insanely hot even if the fan is running att full speed all the time. My solution to this HP-crap-problem will be to buy a new computer from an other manufacturer and let the kids play with this one until it crashes completely. NEVER HP AGAIN!
April 4th, 2009 at 11:08 pm
Plano,
According to HP, it is a hardware issue issue. Whether the issue exists because of an incompatibility between broadcom and MS Windows or not is a question they have not answered. It is also possible that the card malfunctions when the machine heats up.
Good luck solving the issue and if you do conclude and resolve it as being a software, please do share the results.
April 9th, 2009 at 10:33 pm
I have an HP DV6000 model. I sent it in a year ago to fix the wireless issue and guess what???? It broke again!!! They supposedly changed the motherboard and ‘fixed’ the issue but, lo and behold, the wireless hardware disappeared AGAIN. I called HP and they said to send it in and they’ll replace the motherboard again. Is it really worth it? Besides the fact that it will take forever to get fixed, it will probably be a ‘temporary’ fix.
April 13th, 2009 at 6:48 pm
I am so glad that I’m not crazy. I’ve been having the same issues over the last week and couldn’t figure out what happened. This is absolutely ridiculous. I’ve had issues with the laptop since I bought it, but this takes the cake…the wireless capability just disappearing. I cannot believe HP hasn’t stepped up to fix the problem, especially in this economy. This type of publicity could ruin them. We spent a lot of money for these computers and we expect them to last more than a year…this is such crap!!
April 15th, 2009 at 11:21 pm
I’m sorry to say that this has to be a hardware problem. We’ve got two identical dv6500 laptops and I’ve got the mentioned wlan problem with one of them. I tried to swap the wireless cards and the same problem appears in the other computer. So probably it has to do directly with the hardware. I have no warranty and HP refuse to sell a spare part. I probably have to get a USB wlan. But one thing is for sure…NO MORE HP products for me.
April 20th, 2009 at 11:42 am
We managed to get the devices back, don’t know what we did but it did coincide with my son playing FIFA09 (graphics ???) since then we have not rebooted the machine and have altered power settings.

I have owned a DV6331eu for two years now, having researched carefully the reviews at the time - so I thought.
After 8 months I suffered a motherboard failure - black screen and 3 beeps. HP ‘were aware of the issue’ and picked the laptop up for a replacement motherboard. After 14 months the same issue. This time they said it was out of warranty so could do nothing. I pointed out that it was the same problem that ‘once replaced would have no problem with’ So I had to purchase an extended warranty to have the repair re-fixed. Back it went.
I complained about this and received a number of emails saying that the local area representative’ would conatct me to resolve my complaint. After waiting a number of weeks I mailed to ask what was happening and was told that if I have a complaint I need to ring their complaints line. Don’t think so!!!
A keypad was replaced due to sticking keys. Then the battery started to go. I now get a full TEN MINUTES out of the battery. Turns out they are also one of the most expensive batteries to replace and only have a 12 month warranty. Seemingly everyone knows about about the poor batteries that HP provide - everyone except HP. then again, they have your money already so tough!
Then two weeks ago the wireless card problem. On shutdown or sleep mode the laptop ‘forgets’ that it has the hardware fitted (disappears from device manager). They mailed back with a list of things to do. Now I work closely with an IT support desk myself so have access to some very experienced people.
This is a hardware issue or conflict. The chances of the power supply or battery being at fault are as likely as me getting a refund from HP for the extended warranty. Removing that back off the laptop and checking the fitting of the wireless card is NOT the job of the consumer!
Updating the drivers - if the hardware is not recognised (not showing in DM) then every driver on the planet will not help the issue.
Oh, and thanks for the BIOS update HP, the 25% usage I did have is now down to 10%. Cheers.
I was in my local Sony dealer the other day wishing I had spent the extra when I purchased the HP, and mentioned the issues I had with my unit. ‘Couldn’t possibly comment’ was his response with a smile. He said that this was not the first of this he had heard.
My IT colleagues have another term for all HP products. Starts with S, ends in IT. Turns out that none of them own an HP anything. ‘You only do it once’ they say.
So, why do they have such a market presence if everyone knows that they are full of issues??? Why is nothing done against the company for selling defective goods???
Answers on a postcard please………..

I Have an HP Tablet tx1320us with a Broadcom wifi card and the Ron’s Solution worked for me, thank you Ron !!!:
Ron Says:
Solution works for me:
1. With laptop running and wireless button in “on” position, press and hold down the power button until the laptop shuts off completely.
2. Press the power button again to restart.
3. Start Windows normally.
4. Taa-daa!

My son has a HP F500 laptop and its WiFi card just stopped working. The system no longer sees the card and the amber light stays lite. We also have a HP DV6000 and DV9000 series laptops along with a HP Mini. As the DV6000 and DV9000 use the same WiFi card, I tried swapping the WiFi cards with the DV9000. The F500 card worked right away in the DV9000, and the card out of the DV9000 was not seen by the F500. So, the problem is not the WiFi card. (You can get used WiFi cards via eBay for about $10) A USB WiFi plug works fine in the F500. I tried deleting a lot of software my son had loaded, replacing drivers, upgrading the BIOS, along with other solutions on this board, but nothing has helped. Oh, my son always uses a cooling pad, as the laptop gets too hot. It appears that heat, and the motherboard may be the problem. HP support, or lack there of, is of no help, and yes it is out of warranty by about 6 months. Now I just have to wonder how long the DV6000 and DV9000 will last.
May 30th, 2009 at 6:15 pm
Since my last post (March 6, ‘09)the amber light has turned blue twice and the wireless card started working. Both times when I rebooted, the light was amber and no wireless. I use a cooler pad with three fans, one blowing on the video card with the back cover off to get more cool air into the laptop. I can not see how a “hardware” issue can come and go. A software conflict the prevents the HP Wireless Assistant from running is more logical, but for the life of me I can not resolve that conflict. If HP Wireless Assistant does not power the card, it can not work, and will not be seen by the Device Manager. If the amber light turns blue, the card is powered and will work. It is blue right now and this was sent wirelessly.

O.M.G….My tx1327cl “touch screen” is lucky that it is not a “PUNCH
June 10th, 2009 at 8:15 am
HP Tablet - tx1327 - Problem - No Wireless… operating system - Windows Vista - Operator - mild computer knowledge.
So I lost it…then I took it to your easy to find when traveling IT guy @ the “GEEK” place and he fixed it in minutes by right clicking (computer - manage - device danager) then expanding my Network Adapters heading and seeing only one…(sorry I don’t recall which). He then right clicked on the “Network Adapters” heading and selected “scan for changes” and by the time I looked back the blue light was on & wireless worked… it’s fixed!! I missed the last part (MAYBE SOMEONE CAN FILL IN THE BLANKS HERE?) I’d never been so thrilled… that was 3 days ago and…like the rest of us victims… NOW IT WON’T WORK AGAIN!…and I cannot (or am not following proper procedure to) make it work like he did. Even still based on what I have read in this forum I should just smash this thing and get some kind of joy out of my wasted money…I mean really, a wireless USB adapter…it’s a great band-aid but LETS GET REAL Hewlett Packard! Who wants to have a stick hangin out there ready to break? I’d like to see this tablet shoved up the engineers ass sideways…with the USB stick, while it’s running burnin hot. “F#ck’n F#ck”.
Common Ground with others in Forum;
Installed Updates (close to failure)
Low Battery
HOT, HOT, HOT running machine
Oh, and…I have two freinds with newer versions of a very similar HP tablet in the tx series (higher model numbers = more stuff of course) & one runs alot cooler. FOR SURE. I will check to see if it has NVIDIA Driver. As for my other poor freind I havn’t seen it yet…and to think he just bought it after I….eh ehmm…recommended it. Sorry man. I had no clue.

June 11th, 2009 at 7:47 pm
I’m another victim. I started getting the 1 long 2 short beeps followed by a blank screen on my dv6000z after only 1.5 yr of purchase (they replaced the MOBO once when it was still under warranty, after 8 months of use). Now it just won’t come on unless I switch on the power button, hear the beeps…. let it heat up and then switch it off with the power button and try to boot it again.
Basically I just keep it in my bedroom now, plugged on 24/7 with a cooling lap pad under it. Recently, the wireless has just started vanishing too… maybe I’ll just use it to play Spider solitaire now when I feel like it, or better yet, let my 3 yr old watch her Dora DVDs on it. this laptop is a piece of junk, I’m never going to buy a laptop from HP ever again.

My wireless card has stopped working now. I have a HP dv6000, which I purchased from Canada, but which I now use in the UK.
There is so much text on this site, I was just wondering if anyone has managed to get their laptop fixed?
June 14th, 2009 at 6:36 pm
Doubt it. Got mine replaced and have never gone back for an hp.

I have an HP tx1219us which has the problem of the Broadcom Wireless Card not being seen.
I have worked on computers since the 386 and 486 generation (1994) this is a baffling and persistent recurring issue even for me. I will have to concluded the following:
1. It must be a hardware/heat/motherboard issue.
2. Is it worth the TIME to try to resolve the issue?
3. For 40 bucks a wireless USB Pen will fix the problem (if its just the Broadcom issue).
4. Never again will I purchase any HP product. This will be the only thing HP will listen to.
I have tried many of these suggestions found above and more from other sites. Some have worked for a short period of time and again Broadcom would just disappear.
The latest try was:
(however after reboot it took 5 minutes to find the “drivers” for the card).

Salve a tutti

I have a HP G6000 laptop which has been experiencing wireless problems (conveniently AFTER the warranty has expired!).
This is without a doubt the WORST laptop I have ever owned/used! Apart from the wireless problems, there are several other issues with it including:
1. cracks on several parts of the case (the laptop only ever stays on my desk or in my sturdy laptop bag) = crap built quality
2. the latest display drives causes the screen to go blank for about 2 seconds when Vista requires elevation (i.e. if you try to install software or make a change to Vista’s settings and you get the box asking you to click Continue or Cancel) so I’ve had to revert back to the older drivers which are OK
3. the fan used to run at warp speed and the laptop was always hot so I had to remove the heatsink assembly and apply some thermal paste on the CPU and GPU (HP used these crappy stick on things which are clearly useless, after applying the thermal paste the fan runs normally - however I now need a new heatsink/fan assembly because the bearing has gone inside the fan and now sounds like a tractor!)
Anyways… I’ll stop moaning now and tell you guys how I managed to fix my wireless issue.
Basically, if I remove the AC adapter and turn the laptop on so it’s running off the battery, the blue LED comes on and the wireless works. I can then plug the AC adapter back in once Windows has loaded.
If I turn the laptop on with the AC adapter plugged in the wireless LED is orange and the wireless doesn’t work.
Curiously if the switch is set to off and I turn the laptop on running off the battery, the wireless is enabled (but if I move the switch to the ‘on’ position and then back to ‘off’ the LED will go orange and the wireles will be disabled.
You guys with wireless problems should give the above a go and see if it works for you too?

I MIGHT HAVE A PERMANENT SOLUTION. PERFORM AT OWN RISK GOOD LUCK
UH i had this problem for 3 days. I own a HP Presario f557us with broadcom internal wireless card as well. I had temporary fixes before but I THINK i found a more permanent way to fix it. Maybe I was just lucky and I havee to admit, it sounds really stupid.
I right click my computers and click properties.
I ran the rating test “Windows Experience Index”.
I remember the first time I did this test a few years ago, it actually completed but I think it took about 5-8 mins. Well now I ran it again, and it didnt complete, but it froze my entire keyboard and mouse. It was suck on direct3d texture assessment for about 5-6 mins. My CPU fan was running like crazy, and the CPU meter gadget on vista was 100%. Also my power setting was set to HIGH performance. The switch to my wireless card was set to OFF (left side for me). Since my computer froze and the CPU fan was running at max speed, it generated a lot of heat to the point where it was warm where my broadcom was located. I turned off my computer by pushing the power button and restarted my computer. When windows loaded, I saw the HP Wireless Assistance say that WLAN is disabled, so I moved the switch to ON and it turned blue. Restarted my computer to confirm, and its confirmed. It turns amber before window loads but blue once windows is loaded again. GIve it a shot. Mine works now.

Same problem as everyone else. BROADCOMM device missing and can’t connect to any network. Bought Presario 700 Oct. 07. Problem first time May 08. HP replaced motherboard. Ok until this week. After hours with HP chat, they couldn’t help me. Out of warranty even though same problem. They told me only 90 days for a fix. They wouldn’t budge. Wanted $398 to diagnose problem. I told them I can buy new laptop for $399 right now. What a joke. Tried a couple of fixes as the post. Looks like problem with update. Be careful, ran Nvidia update and disconnected battery and charger, push power button for a minute. Disabled BROADCOMM device and enabled. Now ok. Be careful with the updates.

This concerns an HP laptop model dv6353cl with Vista Home edition purchased almost 2 years ago for my granddaughter at college. It ran well until 6 months ago beginning with the intermittent WiFi BroadCom issue (when gone no sign of it in the Device Manager). Within weeks it began to power down by itself. Power up would restore operation until the next random shutdown (WiFi sometimes, sometimes not, mostly not). Before long, power up would leave the screen black with only a spinning hard drive and a few panel indicators lit.
The battery was removed and replaced with no improvement. The RAM memory and WiFi modem were removed and inspected, contacts cleaned and re-installed. The hard drive was removed and tested in another PC and found to be OK. Personal files were removed and stored at this time.
A search discovered that HP had extended the warranty for this model for black screen, and/or the intermittent WiFi problems. HP support agreed to repair the laptop under warranty. Within 2 weeks it was returned from them in operational condition including an unnecessary wipe out of the hard drive. Restore disks from the original Vista were used to return to operation. This lasted for about one month where upon the WiFi stop working once again in the same intermittent fashion as before. Shortly thereafter it again began to power down by itself. The semester ended allowing more time to investigate. The latest Vista device drivers for this model were downloaded from HP and installed, including the newest BIOS update dated March 2009, (this had been updated by HP during their warranty repair). During this procedure the WiFi module started working regularly. This lasted for a week before turning intermittent again. We purchased a Toshiba laptop replacement for my granddaughter.
Windows XP Professional SP2 was installed on the problem HP laptop with a full format of the hard drive. This laptop was available in Windows XP or Vista with both device drivers available from HP. The XP drivers were downloaded and the first one installed was the BroadCom WiFi. Upon installation, the WiFi enabled and worked properly. The XP was updated to SP3 and the latest Windows updates installed. Applications were installed and the laptop performed perfectly for 2 weeks. One again the intermittent WiFi problem returned. This happened shortly after the latest Windows Updates were installed including a newer hardware device driver for the BroadCom modem. The laptop was booted up in Safe mode and the Network Adapters in Device Managers inspected. The BroadCom modem was visible in the list. The laptop was restarted form Safe mode to Normal mode and with this; the WiFi device appeared and was working again. The Device Manager was used to access the current BroadCom driver loaded by the MS Windows update and roll it back to the previous HP driver originally installed.
The laptop worked perfectly for another week after that but once again the WiFi failed. Booting to Safe mode and then Normal consistently returns the WiFi to operation. A summary from all this follows.
I will never buy another HP laptop. The WiFi issue has been around too long and too often without HP correcting the issue. It does not appear to be related solely to Vista OS as I thought originally. From observations I do not believe it is a hardware issue nor a thermal one. When operational, it works perfectly for hours on end in very warm environment. I believe it is software related to the boot sequence and the device driver for the WiFi and possible interaction with other hardware device drivers. I intend to keep working this, and will post further new information as discovered. If unable to solve, I will purchase an external WiFi USB device. Thanks.

Dave,
Wow! I ran the windows experience as described in your post and checked update my score. In the middle of the test a baloon popped up saying the drivers for my broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN were successfully installed and the led turned from orange to blue.
I have tried all the suggestions listed here and yours was the only one that worked for my HP DV6000 Vista POS.
Thanks.

I have a wonderful dv6000. Here’s how I can get the device to come back every time. Just haven’t figured out how to prevent it from disappearing. Read this on a post somewhere, but can’t find it back at the moment.
Boot into Safe Mode.
In the Device Manager, expand System Devices.
You’ll see a number of devices starting with “PCI”. The first is PCI Bus.
There should be 4 “PCI standard host CPU bridge” items after that. Right-click and uninstall all 4 of those.
Reboot normally.
Windows will auto detect and install the devices again, and the wireless device will be back.
This is on Windows XP. Don’t know about Vista, but might be similar.
Only seems to work when you uninstall these in Safe Mode.
I do not believe it’s caused by Windows Updates. Thought it was something to do with Sleep Mode, but I’ve ruled that out as well. I’d like to think it’s heat related, but then why would it disappear after leaving the laptop in sleep mode overnight when it’s nice and cool?
Has anyone noticed the bluetooth continues to work while the wireless disappears? These are both on the same card. Odd.
Has anyone found and/or tried a different internal wireless card not made by Broadcom? Can you buy something like that?
I believe it’s a driver issue of some kind. Just seems to be no fix for it.
Good luck!

I had the same problem with my dv6449. The wireless (Broadcom 4321 draft-n) would drop out and sometimes the computer would freeze requiring a hard restart. I thought it was Vista and struggled with it for a year and a half. I too tried driver updates to no avail. I uninstalled the wireless card and physically removed it. Then I went to Radio Shack and bought a Linksys external wireless G adapter, it looks like a big thumb drive and runs from the USB.
Problem solved!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My dv6449 is 99% better now!
This is an inexpensive solution to the problem and I think is well worth it.

I have been experiencing the same problem of the broadcom adapter disappearing. It just started doing this about a week ago. I thought I was going to have to do a complete system recovery to get it back but tried a boot up in safe mode first and that seemed to work. Boot in safe mode then restart and the adapter should reappear in system devices. Of course this is only a temporary fix, the next time you restart the PC, it disappears again and I have to do the same thing to get it back. Don’t know how long this going to work, I am afraid my PC is going to just finally crash. It is a pain to do this, but at least it allows the adapter to reappear and I can get on the internet. I have an HP Presario k6120us.

Hey I have this nagging issue for a long on and off. One day suddenly it works and the other day it goes off. Then I connect using wirelan and next day the wireless gets switched on. I would have done all possible updates. As some one else mentioned it has got to do with Windows update. No fix yet from HP. Sucking HP!!!!
I am using TX1O00.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:59 pm
I had the same problem with Broadcom WLAN card, but on Dell Mini 9. After reading a lot of forums I concluded it is the card hardware, probably gets flaky with age and when the temperature rises and it is not firmware or software. I decided to replace the card. I am getting a new Atheros mini PCIe card from eBay for $9 with free shipping (shipped from Hong Kong). It is an 802b/g, no “n”, I guess that is why they sell them so cheap now.
September 15th, 2009 at 3:49 pm
Well I am joining the long list off troubled users and frankly I am not the least surprised. I have the tx2000 and it is an absolute mess! Not only does the Broadcom wireless card not work but the tablet doesn’t calibrate either.
I have tried everything from fresh installs from recovery partions, paid phone support, ordered recovery disks, new ordered recovery disks, xp installations, vista 64 installations, updated drivers, updated bios, resetting bios, safe mode and the list goes on and on.
I was thinking of trying to use a fibulator on it, has anyone one had any success

I was about to get a runout HP Mini 2140 when I did a search for “HP Mini 2140 issues” and found that the Broadcom WLAN is rubbish. This site (http://h30434.www3.hp.com/psg/board/message?board.id=Internet&thread.id=1959&view=by_date_ascending&page=1) started it all off for me. I then did a search for Broadcom WLAN issues. I came to this site. I was horrified to read that basically HP have gone 1-2 years selling defective products and done precisely zero about fixing it. Lenovo use Broadcom as well so I expect they’ll have the same issue. The usb wireless (or PCMCIA was the first suggestion I saw for the 2140) 802.11 sounds like it works. Knowing this, I am still tempted to go for the 2140 because it suits my purposes and is cheap because it is about to disappear. Before doing so (and buying a PCMCIA WLAN at the same time), I’d like to know does bluetooth still works despite the WLAN dropping out? If it does then I think the solution for me will be to stick in the PCMCIA 802.11, disable the Broadcom device and continue on my merry way. Does that sound feasible/reasonable or would you advise against it? Thank you.

If you are a UK consumer and are having problems with your HP Laptop take it back to the store you bought it from and demand a refund under the Sale of Goods Act 1979. Don’t worry if it’s out of Warranty you have up to 6 years to raise the issue under this Act although you may have to prove the goods were not of ’satisfactory quality’ and the fault was inherent. Do an internet search to find numerous examples of HP laptop failures and check out HP’s own user forums to support your claim. The DV6000 series in particular seems prone to failure and HP offered an Extended Warranty service to some but not all consumers whose laptops showed symptoms such as losing wireless access, failure to boot up, blank screens etc. It would appear that eventually the motherboard needs to be replaced due to an alleged overheating graphics card, cheap solder and poor cooling. For non UK consumers check out any consumer protection laws that may apply in your country.
September 19th, 2009 at 7:50 pm
Yup, another. Same issues. HP Compaq Presario F730. Running Ubuntu. Looks like I’ll be buying an external wireless dongle. Anyone talking about a class action lawsuit on this one if HP doesn’t make good?
September 19th, 2009 at 8:47 pm
There’s a link to the law firm that’s handling the class action lawsuit for hp on one of these comments.
September 20th, 2009 at 11:15 am
Several Lawsuits have been filed against nVidia and various OEM’s. At least 5 have combined for ‘Class Action’ status and I understand nVidia’s own insurance company (NUFI) of Pittsburgh has filed an action against nVidia.
If you search for nVidia Lawsuits and have the time to trawl through all of them you will get further info. An excellent article by TG Daily is available at: http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/42472/118/

Model: HP DV2304tx:
Driver for wireless network adapter suddenly turned unrecognized right after the warranty. I didn’t realize that I was actually the “LUCKY ONE” for using the laptop for more than 2 years and started having problems just now, wireless issue, hard drive overheat, etc. I was “IMPRESSED” to have experienced this with HP but I think it’s too much for me and I will never take this shit again.

I have 3 HP DV laptops. My daughters laptop a DV2415nr , had the black screen problem, I called HP and they said they would fix it under there x-tra year warranty program. I asked them if I needed to send my other 2 in before they did the same thing and they told me no. Well I got my daughters back and now just 3 weeks later my sons DV6305 has the black screen problem. I called them and now there telling me its out of warranty by 3 weeks and they will fix it at a reduced price of $249.00 . I was like f$%^ You.. HP1s service sucks. I have spent so much money on 3 laptops and cant get this one fixed because it is out of warranty by 3 weeks… I am done with buying HP products…
October 6th, 2009 at 10:25 am
I recently purchased an used HP pavillon dv6120 that worked fine in the first week, then
in the seconde week the laptop gave me a three beeps and a black screen, knowing that
I didn’t have any warranty on it, I spent another week to fix it and I figured out a
way to get rid of the beeps and black screen, since then the laptop was working
great till yesterday when I lost the wireless device on it, I an not an IT specialist,
but I had a DELL inspiron for years that didn’t give me any trouble at all,the first time
and the last time to mess with crappy brands like HP

A SOLUTION from a previous post worked for me!
“Ron Says:
Solution works for me:
1. With laptop running and wireless button in “on” position, press and hold down the power button until the laptop shuts off completely.
2. Press the power button again to restart.
3. Start Windows normally.
4. Taa-daa!”
Thanks Ron

Currently I am working on the same issue for a family friend. This machine is 4*CK3). 100% CPU usage, Light on Broadcom wireless is amber all the time. I assume it is out of event the extended warranty, since posts of the wireless problem is dated around 2007. I have come to the conclusion with all the help from every forum google can provide that the motherboard needs to be replaced. I so wish that everyone around me or associated with me where as tech savvi as I since I waste too much of my time helping friends with their bu11Sh17 problems that can’t be fixed since all the big companies do is hire people that can’t QA(of course MS doesn’t stimulate a healthy QA scenario at all either.) HP is a load of crap, in my opinion. You would be better off getting an ASUS, IBM(Lenovo), APPLE, DELL, or pretty much anything. Dont forget to wipe it clean before you start using it. Oh yeah, any one of them would work better under any operating system other than MS( in my opinion.)

This is to everyone who owns a TX Series notebook with the GPU issue.
HP is not going to do a recall of this model unless we can generate negative publicity about the matter. I know this may seem somewhat futile, but i urge everyone who has issues with this model to do the following:
1. Write a letter to HP about this issue, and send some forum postings of other customers having the same issue along with the letter. Request that HP do a recall of the entire TX series. They may offer to fix your laptop, but please turn them down as request that they do a recall of the entire TX series.
2. The most important part. Send a copy of your letter to each of the major television network, asking that their investigative team take a look at this issue. Please send your letter to the major networks to stations located in the New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. I would be great if everyone sent a letter to all the major networks in all three cities.
3. This ties in to step 2. Send all letters within a 15 to 21 day period. If we can get 500 letters to one network, i am certain that this story would make the news, and shed enough negative light on HP that they may be forced to do a recall.
4. Copy this post to every Forum that you know has posts about this issue. I will take it upon myself to copy this to as many posts as i can, but it does not hurt to have duplicates.

I have a dv2419 which i bought from the US in 2007 summer so it just went out of warranty not that the warranty is any good here in to a UK resident. I have also experienced the Broadcom wireless issue as device manager no longer recognises the wireless card.
I have tried all the wireless drivers with no luck and even resorted to removing the wireless card and reinstalling it again. The morning after I done this the wireless card reappeared on windows vista but next morning after back to square 1. I have no clue what to do, I currently am running of a wifi usb stick great!. This is my 3rd HP laptop in the last 5years all I can say is that my next one will not be a HP!

I too have a Hp Pavilion Tx1327cl craptop with the Broadcom wireless issue. I have tried Windows XP Pro and Windows Vista Home Premium and all of the various fixes listed on this and other sites, only to have the problem only temporaily resolved. I have not tried the penny under the heat shield fix I must admit. What to do, the laptop is too small to make a good boat anchor and too unreliable to take on the road. Never again will I purchase or recommend another HP product until HP does the right thing and takes responsibility for the flaws of its entire TX series of Craptops! Hp shame on you! You have become the Packard Bell of the two thousands! NEVER HP AGAIN!!!!
November 2nd, 2009 at 6:53 am
I almost forgot, HP is not short for Hewlett Packard! It really is short for “Hopeless Products”. Best of luck to all trying to resolve this manufacturing defect. Also does anyone know of the correct Nvidia drivers for the Chipset and Video driver for Windows XP Pro for a HP Pavilion Tx1327cl?
November 18th, 2009 at 3:00 pm
this prob is uber wide spread i would love to be part of any class action lawsuits this is bullshit…i bought this laptop for my girlfriend for school, its a compaq f700 (which is owned by hp) so this prob is across many many models also the heat made by this laptop already broke the s video by melting the damn saw-der <i have no idea how to spell it xD i mean really then hp support tried to convince me i broke the wireless…as in i made it randomly load a retarded update that made the hp wireless assistant and trash broadcom card decide not to show up or open or work in any way what so ever…omg effing douches my poor g/f is pretty much screwed now as no one seems to have a good fix for this and hp i hope u know I WILL NEVER BUY YOUR CRAP AGAIN ever and will tell everyone i know to avoid it aswell. so sad.

I just want to take a moment to thank this site, it’s information has enabled me to fix the problem with my wireless connection. THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart. You saved me so much money and time.

Ok.. I have been reading this forum and am finally seeing the light. My nephew has a HP dv6000 laptop and the wireless card stopped working after he installed some MS updates. I have updated the Bios, the drivers and reseated and finally replaced the wireless card. After reading this forum is there anything that I can do short of sending this damn thing to HP? I dont know if it is out of warranty or not but he needs this for school.
Will unisnstalling Roxio or updating the Nvidia drivers actually work permanently? It is running Vista premium I believe….. I was planning on restoring it this weekend but if I don’t have to I don’t want to waste my time…
Any advice would be much appreciated.

I have the same problem of a disappearing (in midst of an internet connection) or missing Broadcom wireless device (not in either Device Manager or Network Connections folder). So far, my last trick was to uninstall the NVIDIA network controller from the Device Manager menu (click on device for its properties then “uninstall”). A reboot into safe mode with networking then reboot or start to normal mode retains the wireless device. BUT, as a few have said, the fixes have been temporary. The previous tricks to the latest have held the wireless device for only 2 straight days before trying some other trick. The constant, though, is the wireless device can always be found in safe mode and a connection can be made. Admittedly, sometimes the wireless device isn’t immediately detected but waiting a few minutes or refreshing the Network Connections page can bring out the device. Then, the computer can be started back into normal mode for the return of the wireless device.
Some have stated that this issue isn’t software-based but related to defective hardware. But how would that explain the detection of the wireless device in safe mode? I’m not disputing that theory, but just asking.
Looking at the running processes as monitored from task manager, I know many of the programs running in normal mode are either disabled (because of their drivers aren’t loaded) or removed from automatic startup. So, I wonder if it isn’t a conflict issue - either of drivers or software. I’ve noticed that the antivirus program (Avast), which normally runs for its real-time protection (it can’t be disabled permanently; it resets to whatever option selected after installation with each startup), is shut down in safe mode.
It is curious that the suggestion of shutting down by pressing the on/off button, then restarting has worked for some. Doesn’t a manual shutdown bypass the saving of the settings of the last session?
Another curiosity is the incidents when I’ve lost the internet connection: viewing youtube video clip; viewing music video clips from a musician’s official site (that was when I first both lost an internet connection and the wireless device disappeared; and downloading updates for certain security programs. See the theme?
Yes, I’ve scanned the hard drive with several anti-malware and antivirus programs. There were a few detected and either quarantined or deleted. But I’ve read that many of the familiar security software may be able to detect the threats but not as effective in removing them. I don’t know if I’m grasping at straws there, but I do know that when my initial response was to scan the hard drive, often the security programs would enable the wireless device and actually connect…until the scanning was complete. I had 3 days of unstable connections with those repeated scans. Longest connection, then, was during a Super AntiSpyware scan until that, too, finished.
Now, I don’t think the scans per se were the root of the solution. I offer up the account in hope someone might know the underlying mechanisms and this person can explain why scanning can awaken the wireless device (sometimes returning it from its missing status).
Other tricks that I had thought were solutions, but ended up temporary include: running LSPfix.exe (one of my first “fixes” that produced sustained connection for more than a day) or winsockXPfix; repairing system file checker, network connections and safeboot key from a feature on Super AntiSpyware; disabling wireless device then rebooting to enable.
Other actions taken: I have disabled automatic Windows Update after I’ve had this problem. With manual update, I can control specifically what update to download and install a blind auto-update. The Broadcom’s drivers have been updated from 7/2007 to 10/2008. It doesn’t seem to be a factor, one way or the other. I didn’t bother with the BIOS update since that didn’t seem to help. As such, I’m reluctant for a system restore, format or reinstallation of the OS (though I’ve read that is perhaps the truest method in ridding of embedded malware).
Regardless, I don’t stray from cleaning the registry with CCleaner, RegScrubXP and RegSeeker (surprisingly, all three detect different issues) and running LSPfix.exe (purely precautionary though it never finds any problems). And I reboot to safe mode if a normal boot doesn’t change anything.
BTW, people have noted their laptops would run hot. My Compaq Presario F572US doesn’t in normal mode. But, whoo, in safe mode, from the moment of powering up, the fan goes into overdrive and the bottom of the laptop is noticeably HOT. I’ve tried to check its internal temp but the CoreTemp program doesn’t work in safe mode.
Sorry for the long details, but hopefully they might lead someone on the trail for a genuine solution (other than buying a non-HP laptop, which I DO have in mind in the near future).
December 21st, 2009 at 10:45 am
Again, I spoke too soon. Lost internet connection so I’m definitely back to only temporary fixes and I have not figured out a permanent solution. In fact, after cleaning out the registry and running LSPfix.exe, I rebooted into safe mode with networking. The wireless Broadcom device was detected, as seen by the blue wireless switch and listing under Network Connections in the Start menu. In safe mode it ran hot and the fan was particularly loud. I’ve never paid attention to the sound of operating in safe mode but I’ve never had a sustained reason for starting in safe mode either before the disappearing/missing device. Cut to the chase, I notice the computer was connected to the Internet but it took me a few minutes to open Mozilla. As soon as I successfully logged onto Google Documents, the laptop suddenly shut down with a black screen and a short, click-like sound. By this time (maybe just 5 minutes into safe mode), the fan increasingly got louder. After the laptop shutdown unexpectedly, I felt the bottom of the laptop and it was the hottest that I could remember. It was especially so in the left corner. Anyway, maybe these details are irrelevant.
With the testimonies of an eventual dead motherboard, I am concerned enough with the potential short life of this laptop to just buy a more reliable laptop or even a netbook (dedicated to surfing) - non-HP, of course!! I’ve given up that there is a real, permanent HP solution. Paradoxically, I had a 1998 HP desktop that lasted well over 10 years.
Good luck everyone!!

I’ve had every imaginable problem with my dv6000 series discussed on this site. Thankfully, I purchased a 3-year warranty once upon a time, so I was able to have the overheating, the display and the network card issues resolved, but I’m afraid that the replaced parts will work only temporarily. HP replaced my network card, and three months later is experienced sudden death again. However, this post isn’t about that. I can’t tell whether the repairs to the graphics card are causing the problem or it’s a whole other issue with HP’s dv models (fixing one problem, creates another. Every time my notebook goes is in sleep or idle mode, or is left alone “long enough” HP Quickplay launches automatically. It’s annoying to say the least b/c I have to wait for Quickplay to load completely before I can close it, and the notebook is essentially unresponsive while Quickplay loads. And no, I’m nowhere near those Quickplay launch buttons. Does anyone have a solution. For we all know how remarkably unsupportive the HP support really is.

HP Media SmartTV software Stoped working after installing avast anti-virus. I tried to update the HP Media SmartTv and after that, HP Media SmartTV worked ok. Updating Windows Vist occured by the OS. after that i noticed the wireless wan not working.
so either HP SmartTV update or Windows Vista update is the source of the problem. I made a system recovery, disabled windows update, found the wireless was ok, uninstalled Media SmartTV, insatlled avast. until now, everything is ok.
I found this :
Hey thank you! I ended up having to chat with one of the HP advisors (Sebastian you rock!) I found the wireless button, but when I pressed it the wireless status went from “disabled” to “off” with no ON! Turns out I had to restore the default setting on the computer to get it to turn back on–just press f10 as the notebook is booting up (so before the desktop is loaded after you restart) and then press f9 and then YES to restore default settings. Boy was that frustrating! Simple fix though so I hope anyone else with the same problem reads this!

Not windows updates nor hp mediasmart tv are the source of the problem (wireless is disabled). I think the problem because of a failur of running or loading the device driver of the wireless device by the os (windows). that does not happen always but sometimes. So whenever the problem happen, do the following:
- restart windows vista, 7.
- when windows small round logo appears and before logon window, touch the wireless led one time. It shoukd be blue.
- After loggingon, you can enable or disable the wireless device (touching the led of the wireless device) without any problem.
This is my last answer

Solution!!! That works every time. Heating THE GPU for dv6000 and Dv9000
I have a DV9000 with the same problem as everyone else… HP Sucks!
Triple boot system OS windows 7 XP and Ubuntu Linux
Video graphics GeForce go 6150
As crazy as it sounds you must heat up the graphics card or GPU which is below the wireless card. Playing a game such as call to duty 4 or any game that uses the graphics card in an intensive way will do the trick. Now what happens is that the graphics card heats up a bit and in turn also heats the wireless card, which in turn on the wireless card. I played intensive games for a while so what happens is that the amber light turns by itself to blue light. Here are some things that you can do get back your wireless card. Please note the solutions I present are temporary in nature but work every time you try them. They have a 90% success rate and a 10% failure rate. It’s safe but Proceed with caution do not play around.
NOT SO FAST SOLUTION…works if you have time to kill
1. Play a game that uses the graphics card, eventually your computer will heat up and the amber light will turn blue by itself, if the amber light does not blue then close the game and wait to see it comes by itself. This could take anywhere from 45 min to 1 hour or some times less depending on the game you play.
Fast solution works fast at most time… Works if you need things fast …..Windows 7and XP
2. Download a program called FurMark version 1.7.0. It’s a free program that analyses your computer graphics to see how efficient they are under certain resolutions or enabling certain high end properties.
3. Install the program.
4. Run the program every time you don’t see the blue light of your wireless
5. Under run mode select Stability Test then select xtreme burning mode do not select log GPU Temperature or benching.
6. Under standard sizes select 640×480 do not select full screen.
7. Leave everything else as default.
8. This works for me every time place the laptop on a hard surface or table, never or your lap. Click GO!
9. When running the program a window will come and you will see a graph displayed on your monitor this graph represents the temperature of your GPU or graphics card. The graph will show you the minimum and the maximum temperature. Allow for the maximum temperature to reach a temperature of 97 to 91 C, let it stay around those temperatures for 360 seconds or 6 minutes. The time is display at the right of the window, the program tell you how much time you been running the program. Do not let the temperature reach 120 C this could cause damage. If you see the temperature rising to 120 C passing 100 C close the program immediately or end the program. I do not recommend letting it pass more than 100
C. You wireless card will work if you let achieve a max temperature of 97 C or 91, will not work anything below 90 C
10. Once the program closes the amber light will turn instantly to blue light and you will get the wireless back. If this is not the case then turn off the system and turn back on normally immediately and you should see that it worked. If it fails try again to run the program, for me out of 10 tries 1 will fail. Please note the temperature at which the wireless comes back is by allowing the temperature to be between 91C and 97C, This temperature can be maintain constant when running the program by allowing the exit air of the fan to be freely, by this I mean place the laptop on top of a book and allow for the exit vents to be expose to cooler room temperature, you will see this in the graph.
11. I have noticed that after running this program for many times, sometimes the blue light will come back every now and then without actually running the program. Also I noticed that if you adjust the computer brightness to low and select the saver power plan and without connecting the AC the blue light and turn the computer on, the wireless will come every now and then.
Worked under windows 7 no software needed….Works equally as well.
1. Click start or windows logo
2. Set your mouse on computer then do a right click and then select properties
3. Click windows experience index
4. Click run the assessment or click re run the assessment
5. The index assessment will do the same as the program above it will test your graphics thus causing a heating of the GPU and hopefully enabling the wireless.
6. If it fails try to run again the assessment.
Please note that this is temporary, because if you are able to get the blue light, and if you happen to restart or set the computer to hibernate or sleep the light will turn amber. But performing the steps above will get the wireless to work again forever as long as you don’t turn off computer or restart or hibernate or sleep.
These are just some things I have done in order for the wireless card to come back again and so far it works every time, my computer is just great when the wireless works, it becomes a complete computer, of course it is a lot easier to buy a USB wireless adapter, which I did, but sometimes people don’t want to waste more or it is very inconvenient. Give it a try and share your experiences.
• In theory it may be possible for one to actually open the computer and somehow incorporating a copper penny in the GPU, thus allowing for the GPU to reach the desirable temperature at which the wireless card turns back on forever, further research or knowledge is needed to see if this can help and will not harm the computer.

Hi Guys I’m from the UK & want to say this is the longest thread I’ve ever seen. If only HP took a look at these threads to see what us customers are going through.
Just have to say I took in recently a freebie of a HP G6030EM notebook. When I looked at this site I thought why the fuck did I take it onboard. Should of ended on the scrap heap instead. I keep getting a permanent orange light from the wireless, no card is detected via device manager. I swapped my other wireless card which is the Apple Airport Extreme Wireless N Mimo. It detected it, installed drivers automatically & guess what, it disappeared off the face of the earth. I’m thinking could this be down to a dodgy switch on the motherboard. I’m also thinking of buying a faulty laptop & re-solder the switch from the faulty one to my faulty one at the moment, just to elimate process. I can’t understand why this is happening because it worked ok for a while until previous owner got fed up & threw it my way. Wasn’t it silly of me to accept lol.
Can I ask, has anyone tried re-soldering a new switch to the motherboard, reason it will save me alot of time messing about if someone has already done so.

Hi Jason,
I don’t know anyone who’s tried re-soldering. I couldn’t even get a new switch. I tried to order one from hp but they wouldn’t sell it to me. I found it on their website at some point but it said on back order. Then I tried to call and order it, but they refused to sell it to me saying that wasn’t the problem. That’s how I got a replacement.

I love this machine and can’t live without it but,,,, this broadcom thing is making me postal….
I got my dv6000 in March 2007,,, Best Buy,,,, 3 year warranty…..
March 2008,,, no broadcom. Had the mother board replaced (free)…
March 2009,,, no broadcom. Had the motherboard replaced (free)…
July 2009,,, no broadcom. This time I had to pay because they said it was a software problem,,, a Trojan….. BULLSHIT!!!!!!!
December 2009,,,, no broadcom…. I have literally tried EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The broadcom works but only when it wants to….
I have been researching the Federal and Pennsylvania Lemon Laws. It seem that when you buy something,,,, there is an implied contract. You pay 100% of the purchase price,,,, the product should work 100% of the time… I’m going to contact one of those,,, “We get money for you” lawyers… Wish me luck…. It may be helpful to the rest of you guys..

raymond, how hot does the machine get?

I seem to have found a solution for the disappearing Broadcom connection on my HP Pavilion notebook PC (touch wood!). The last time the connection worked, I set a restore point. When the connection once more had disappeared, I restored the PC to that point. Ever since, the connection works, even after BSODs or reboots. Have no idea why!

It could be that there is no relation between cause and effect, though.
