Trouble with HP Laptops’ Wireless Broadcom Cards

-More of the Wireless Broadband Malfunction

-10 Reasons to not buy Hewlett Packard (hp)

Keywords: HP, Problems, Issues, Wireless problems, Wireless device vanish, vanishes, HP Warranty, International Warranry, Hewlett Packard, Wireless Card, Broadcom Wireless on HP Laptop, Disappearing wireless card in HP laptops, Undetectable in device manager, Windows Vista, Windows XP

AND yet again we come to another grand session of the HP saga of surprises. The problem I’m about to address comes with several different models. In particular, it seems to be very popular with versions of the dv6000 laptop from HP, but my dv2120us from the dv2000 series has now also become a victim of HP’s disappointing hardware. I’ve been a dedicated HP customer for years, and I think the’ve just about sealed the deal to convert me with this one.

Low and behold, my wireless card simply stops working. The computer behaves like it’s not there. When I flip the wireless switch on the laptop to off, the light stays blue (it needs to be red when off), when I switch it on, it stays blue. Basically, the switch does nothing. What else, device manager is unable to see the wireless adapter even when I switch on the hidden device view. Btw, I’m running Windows Vista Business.

Tried the latest wireless driver, no use. Spoke to a monkey on HP chat, still no use. Hp’s only solution? Send in the laptop for a motherboard replacement. They won’t even send me a damn motherboard to I can replace it myself. Apparently it’s too difficult. What mullarki!

With the research I’ve done, it seems like an update to the Nvidia chipset or the graphics driver MAY solves the issue, so I’m going to give that a shot. If not, some suggest restoring the laptop back to XP Media Center may resolve the issue. In either case, I’m going to try this out and see if it works.

This may be a hopeless cause, since you have to be in the US to employ the HP warranty.  Outside the US, my shit is worth more than HP warranty, especially here in Pakistan. See who else is ranting about terrible HP support and the bizaare disappearing of the Wireless Broadcom device in HP laptops here @ http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=1104931&admit=-682735245+1177447268014+28353475.

I’ve had every imaginable problem with my dv6000 series discussed on this site. Thankfully, I purchased a 3-year warranty once upon a time, so I was able to have the overheating, the display and the network card issues resolved, but I’m afraid that the replaced parts will work only temporarily. HP replaced my network card, and three months later is experienced sudden death again. However, this post isn’t about that. I can’t tell whether the repairs to the graphics card are causing the problem or it’s a whole other issue with HP’s dv models (fixing one problem, creates another. Every time my notebook goes is in sleep or idle mode, or is left alone “long enough” HP Quickplay launches automatically. It’s annoying to say the least b/c I have to wait for Quickplay to load completely before I can close it, and the notebook is essentially unresponsive while Quickplay loads. And no, I’m nowhere near those Quickplay launch buttons. Does anyone have a solution. For we all know how remarkably unsupportive the HP support really is.

HP Media SmartTV software Stoped working after installing avast anti-virus. I tried to update the HP Media SmartTv and after that, HP Media SmartTV worked ok. Updating Windows Vist occured by the OS. after that i noticed the wireless wan not working.

so either HP SmartTV update or Windows Vista update is the source of the problem. I made a system recovery, disabled windows update, found the wireless was ok, uninstalled Media SmartTV, insatlled avast. until now, everything is ok.

    I found this :

Hey thank you! I ended up having to chat with one of the HP advisors (Sebastian you rock!) I found the wireless button, but when I pressed it the wireless status went from “disabled” to “off” with no ON! Turns out I had to restore the default setting on the computer to get it to turn back on–just press f10 as the notebook is booting up (so before the desktop is loaded after you restart) and then press f9 and then YES to restore default settings. Boy was that frustrating! Simple fix though so I hope anyone else with the same problem reads this!

Not windows updates nor hp mediasmart tv are the source of the problem (wireless is disabled). I think the problem because of a failur of running or loading the device driver of the wireless device by the os (windows). that does not happen always but sometimes. So whenever the problem happen, do the following:

    - restart windows vista, 7.
    - when windows small round logo appears and before logon window, touch the wireless led one time. It shoukd be blue.
    - After loggingon, you can enable or disable the wireless device (touching the led of the wireless device) without any problem.

    This is my last answer

Solution!!! That works every time. Heating THE GPU for dv6000 and Dv9000
I have a DV9000 with the same problem as everyone else… HP Sucks!
Triple boot system OS windows 7 XP and Ubuntu Linux
    Video graphics GeForce go 6150

As crazy as it sounds you must heat up the graphics card or GPU which is below the wireless card. Playing a game such as call to duty 4 or any game that uses the graphics card in an intensive way will do the trick. Now what happens is that the graphics card heats up a bit and in turn also heats the wireless card, which in turn on the wireless card. I played intensive games for a while so what happens is that the amber light turns by itself to blue light. Here are some things that you can do get back your wireless card. Please note the solutions I present are temporary in nature but work every time you try them. They have a 90% success rate and a 10% failure rate. It’s safe but Proceed with caution do not play around.

NOT SO FAST SOLUTION…works if you have time to kill
    1. Play a game that uses the graphics card, eventually your computer will heat up and the amber light will turn blue by itself, if the amber light does not blue then close the game and wait to see it comes by itself. This could take anywhere from 45 min to 1 hour or some times less depending on the game you play.
Fast solution works fast at most time… Works if you need things fast …..Windows 7and XP

    2. Download a program called FurMark version 1.7.0. It’s a free program that analyses your computer graphics to see how efficient they are under certain resolutions or enabling certain high end properties.
    3. Install the program.
    4. Run the program every time you don’t see the blue light of your wireless
    5. Under run mode select Stability Test then select xtreme burning mode do not select log GPU Temperature or benching.
    6. Under standard sizes select 640×480 do not select full screen.
    7. Leave everything else as default.
    8. This works for me every time place the laptop on a hard surface or table, never or your lap. Click GO!
    9. When running the program a window will come and you will see a graph displayed on your monitor this graph represents the temperature of your GPU or graphics card. The graph will show you the minimum and the maximum temperature. Allow for the maximum temperature to reach a temperature of 97 to 91 C, let it stay around those temperatures for 360 seconds or 6 minutes. The time is display at the right of the window, the program tell you how much time you been running the program. Do not let the temperature reach 120 C this could cause damage. If you see the temperature rising to 120 C passing 100 C close the program immediately or end the program. I do not recommend letting it pass more than 100
    C. You wireless card will work if you let achieve a max temperature of 97 C or 91, will not work anything below 90 C
    10. Once the program closes the amber light will turn instantly to blue light and you will get the wireless back. If this is not the case then turn off the system and turn back on normally immediately and you should see that it worked. If it fails try again to run the program, for me out of 10 tries 1 will fail. Please note the temperature at which the wireless comes back is by allowing the temperature to be between 91C and 97C, This temperature can be maintain constant when running the program by allowing the exit air of the fan to be freely, by this I mean place the laptop on top of a book and allow for the exit vents to be expose to cooler room temperature, you will see this in the graph.
    11. I have noticed that after running this program for many times, sometimes the blue light will come back every now and then without actually running the program. Also I noticed that if you adjust the computer brightness to low and select the saver power plan and without connecting the AC the blue light and turn the computer on, the wireless will come every now and then.
Worked under windows 7 no software needed….Works equally as well.
    1. Click start or windows logo
    2. Set your mouse on computer then do a right click and then select properties
    3. Click windows experience index
    4. Click run the assessment or click re run the assessment
    5. The index assessment will do the same as the program above it will test your graphics thus causing a heating of the GPU and hopefully enabling the wireless.
    6. If it fails try to run again the assessment.
Please note that this is temporary, because if you are able to get the blue light, and if you happen to restart or set the computer to hibernate or sleep the light will turn amber. But performing the steps above will get the wireless to work again forever as long as you don’t turn off computer or restart or hibernate or sleep.
These are just some things I have done in order for the wireless card to come back again and so far it works every time, my computer is just great when the wireless works, it becomes a complete computer, of course it is a lot easier to buy a USB wireless adapter, which I did, but sometimes people don’t want to waste more or it is very inconvenient. Give it a try and share your experiences.
    • In theory it may be possible for one to actually open the computer and somehow incorporating a copper penny in the GPU, thus allowing for the GPU to reach the desirable temperature at which the wireless card turns back on forever, further research or knowledge is needed to see if this can help and will not harm the computer.

i am so pissed!!!!!!!!!!!. this laptop was so expensive. i have an hp pavilion tx2000. my wireless light shows its on yet it cannot detect a network at all for the past 5 days.my Wlan has just disappeared only god knows to where, any ideas on how to resolve this problem??????

Hi Guys I’m from the UK & want to say this is the longest thread I’ve ever seen. If only HP took a look at these threads to see what us customers are going through.

Just have to say I took in recently a freebie of a HP G6030EM notebook. When I looked at this site I thought why the fuck did I take it onboard. Should of ended on the scrap heap instead. I keep getting a permanent orange light from the wireless, no card is detected via device manager. I swapped my other wireless card which is the Apple Airport Extreme Wireless N Mimo. It detected it, installed drivers automatically & guess what, it disappeared off the face of the earth. I’m thinking could this be down to a dodgy switch on the motherboard. I’m also thinking of buying a faulty laptop & re-solder the switch from the faulty one to my faulty one at the moment, just to elimate process. I can’t understand why this is happening because it worked ok for a while until previous owner got fed up & threw it my way. Wasn’t it silly of me to accept lol.

Can I ask, has anyone tried re-soldering a new switch to the motherboard, reason it will save me alot of time messing about if someone has already done so.

  • http://www.asifism.com Commie B

    Hi Jason,

I don’t know anyone who’s tried re-soldering. I couldn’t even get a new switch. I tried to order one from hp but they wouldn’t sell it to me. I found it on their website at some point but it said on back order. Then I tried to call and order it, but they refused to sell it to me saying that wasn’t the problem. That’s how I got a replacement.

    I HATE HP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love this machine and can’t live without it but,,,, this broadcom thing is making me postal….
    I got my dv6000 in March 2007,,, Best Buy,,,, 3 year warranty…..
March 2008,,, no broadcom. Had the mother board replaced (free)…
March 2009,,, no broadcom. Had the motherboard replaced (free)…
July 2009,,, no broadcom. This time I had to pay because they said it was a software problem,,, a Trojan….. BULLSHIT!!!!!!!
December 2009,,,, no broadcom…. I have literally tried EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The broadcom works but only when it wants to….
I have been researching the Federal and Pennsylvania Lemon Laws. It seem that when you buy something,,,, there is an implied contract. You pay 100% of the purchase price,,,, the product should work 100% of the time… I’m going to contact one of those,,, “We get money for you” lawyers… Wish me luck…. It may be helpful to the rest of you guys..

I seem to have found a solution for the disappearing Broadcom connection on my HP Pavilion notebook PC (touch wood!). The last time the connection worked, I set a restore point. When the connection once more had disappeared, I restored the PC to that point. Ever since, the connection works, even after BSODs or reboots. Have no idea why!

  • http://homepage.bluewin.ch/corinna/ Corinna

It could be that there is no relation between cause and effect, though.

hi hello my uncle bought me hp pavillion laptop and unfortunately the hard disk lost its function the repair shop said it needs a new one hard disk to have its function again and it has a 1 year warranty which it was bought month of october, i need a replacement for it my problem is how can i replace it im here in the philippines and it was bought in chicago pls help me.

  • http://www.asifism.com Commie B

Only way to get a replacement HDD is to initiate a chat session with HP help, go through their diagnosis to establish that it is defective (or dead!), get a replacement one shipped to someone you know in the US who can then ship it to you. Buying might be cheaper as courier shipping isn’t exactly cheap.

Hi! My gf had this dv2214us sitting in her closet because of this broadcom (and other vista) issue for a little over a year now. I took it, bought a battery. After doing a restore of vista, which I hate, I like XP, but for the price i heart Ubuntu. I installed ubuntu 10 32 and 64 bit versions, but couldnt get the broadcom card to activate. After trying ubuntu 9.10 amd64 version, I had wireless for about a week. I thought it was ubuntu, and after trying redhat, fedora, and suse with no luck getting ndiswrapper to even acknowledge the existence of a windows card, I installed unbuntu 9.04 and it showed up without me doing anything. three weeks later and the damn thing is dissapearing, for instance it worked last night, less than 24 hours ago – I was on my network with the broadcom card, today, I have my rosewill 12 dollar usb network card in reading about all the crappy hp products out there. I just ordered a Intel Pro wireless mini-pci-e card for this thing to see if it works, has anyone else attempted this? After some reading like the motherboard is just a pile of crap. Im glad I paid 0 dollars for this thing. For you, two things to learn from this – 1) HP hasnt made a good consumer product in almost a decade (the only thing I trust from them now are 500+ dollar laserjets and plotters), 2) AMD hasnt made a RELIABLE processer since the 486DX. The chipsets that support AMD have terrible records of compatibility and reliability, nvidia GO made great graphics 10 years ago, I think I’ll keep my company with Dell and Lenovo Intel PCs, and IBM servers, and HP laserjets. Two of my friends have had similar problems with their HP desktops – both times it was the multimedia bay having a bad chipset with TERRIBLE drivers, as well as non-functional drivers in vista. HP blows on consumer pcs.

hi! i got laptop from my company and it is HP G6000 with amd64 athlonX2 + nVidia grpahics + broadcom wireless. i have the same problem that wlan just disappeared from the device manager and hence wlan driver is not working. kindly help me out and tell me solution to get rid of this problem
    thanking in advance

  • JOI—-

Hey, got the same problem… my wireless doesn’t work. Tried with everything…reinstalling the drivers, taking my laptop to 0, and using the system recovery but it didnt work.
I have an HP Pavilion TX 2000, uses Nvidia GeForce Go 6150, where can I get an update to see if it works?

  • luxmas

    Hi,
all the disappeared broadcom wireless card work fine! Try to install in another motherboard and you’ll see!
I’ve discovered that nVIDIA PCIe has a too low voltage that in fact disable any connected card, or work randomly if temperature raise.

  • lala

i have several laptops at my work: three hp (worthless mentioning the model) with intel wireless adapter, one hp with broadcom wa and some acer also with broadcom. both the acer and the hp that have the BROADCOM wireless adpaters experience frequente problems due to adapter instability – i always manage to restore the signal by ‘rubbing’ devices – restarting the adapter, restaring the access point, the switch, maybe restarting the computer…the three hp with intel never show any instability or signal loss no matter the os (windows xp, vista, 7). so, from my point of view it’s the broadcom that fails, maybe because of temperature maybe because of poor quality

  • Kathy Miller

Hey everyone I know how you feel about the wireless problems. About a year ago I contacted HP to inform them my WIFI wasn’t working. They asked what model number it was as well as a few other questions about my computer. Low and behold they mention that an e-mail had gone out to HP and Compaq owners about a design error that was causing the computers to overheat and burn out the WIFI card. Funny I never got the e-mail. Anyway I was told that if I had sent my computer back to them within a certain time frame they would have replaced my WIFI card for free. But since I didn’t contact them until after that time frame it was going to cost me $250 for them to replace it. Even though I argued with HP that they admitted to the design error and they should replace the card for free they wouldn’t do it. I will never buy another HP product as long as I live. I have had friends of mine ask me for my opinion of what computer they should buy. I always tell them deffinately not any HP because HP wont stand behind their products. Too bad I didn’t realize this before purchasing my daughter’s laptop for college. I would have bought something not affiliated with HP

  • Allan Isobe

I reset my bios…See Posting #16 above. This worked for me.

  • Benji

Only one practical solution – get a separate USB wifi adapter – works all the time!

  • andrew

i have an hp dv9008nr, and i am now having the broadcom wireless problem. about 2 years ago my screen was going black, and they actually fixed it for free (although they didnt give an explanation to what was fixed). pretty sad i just read all the posts dating back to 3 years ago and there is still no solution for the broadcom problem from hp? what terrible customer service. i will never buy an hp product again.

  • Yavé

Ah dear sir Asif, such interesting case seems exactly the same as mine, so delicious to see im not the only one and yes Im converting to another company of computers thanks to this. I’ve tried the nvidia driver too but it seems that my problem persists, Im saying to myself that this is pointless and I’m getting another computer instead… ty for the information about this, it has made me change my mind.

  • Corcoran

In the UK with a friend’s HP G6000 laptop. Exact same problem here. Orange light, replacement card hasn’t made any difference, no wireless adapter showing in device manager.

Have purchased a usb wifi adapter to get them back on the web but am shocked to read this thread (amongst others) about this problem.

HP only providing warranty for laptops in the US is an embarrassment.

Thank the lord I’m typing this out on my Dell laptop with 3 years next-business-day warranty..

  • tbssic

Go to youtube and watch the “dv6000 reflow”. I did it myself and it worked. I’ve had EVERY problem you can have with this thing (dv6000}. From no wireless to blinking lights and blank screen. From no boot to cursor freezing. You name it,,,, I’ve had it. I had 2 mother boards replaced. I did the BIOS. I did total system restores. I’ve tried EVERYTHING HP said. I’ve tried EVERYTHING I ever read. I’ve tried EVERYTHING anyone ever suggested. I’ve tried witchcraft, voodoo, clean living and prayer. Nothing worked,,,,, for long. These machines have an overheating problem, caused by bad design.

  • GH

Hi All, just read this then found a solution for my problem, card not showing in Device manager. I removed the service for broadcom tray object in msconfig and rebooted. found device again on startup and then reinstalled drivers, all working fine for few hours and many restarts

Dont have a hp myself would never buy one!

  • tbssic

Again,,,,, I’ve done it all. I took the card out and put it back in. Sure it worked,,, for a little while. Everything I ever did worked,,,, for a while…. ALL are fixes,,,, NOT cures… The same problems ALWAYS came back and new ones always came with them and the new problems were worse the the old ones…. The longer you own the machine,,, the more heat the video chip is exposed to and the more problems you’re going to have. Sad to say,,,, there is only ONE cure…. Do the reflow…….. I did it myself… You can pay to have it done,,,, $125….. Very cheap…. I’ve spent hundreds on this thing so far. Had I only known…
My machine is now running like it never did before. My broadcom is also back. I had been getting my signal from a USB for the past 18 months.

  • luxmas

    Hello everyone!
The problem is THERMAL OVERRUN of NVIDIA CHIPSET. The BGA pin breaks out!
If you are expert in handling electronics, you may resolder BGA chip with a special reflow oven.
I do it, and my PC works fine again!!!
I SUGGEST TO IMPROVE HEAT DISSIPATION REPLACING THE ORIGINAL SILKPAD.

  • Sai

I too have this same problem on my tx2110us tablet PC. Found this forum and read most of the user experiences. I just went and bought a $10 USB Wi-Fi adapter. I see no reason to get HP involved in this relatively minor issue. If I did, we’re looking at weeks of downtime with many part replacements and software/OS re-configurations. It may even introduce some new problems!

I am not a fan of HP and won’t buy from them again.

But as far as I am concerned, the case is closed. I am back in business with USB adapter.

  • Deb

I have gone through the same as most of you. Hp pavillion dv6000 – sent back 2 years ago for new motherboard because lost wireless. And now it is gone again. At least it lasted 2 years. I have put in my information regarding the Nvidia class action lawsuit. My laptop is on the list of HP products that, when the lawsuits’ decision is done next month (December), will be replaced by HP because of the Nvidia defective parts. (at least that is what the lawsuit states right now) I’m hoping it all goes well, and hopefully I will get a new laptop that will work like it is suppose to. Good luck all – and thank you for this forum.

  • Ed

I used the repair that is suggested for the nVida chip (black screen on boot up). I removed the PCB and all of the periphials, RAM and such then made a card board template which only allows the wireless card plug to show. I then heated it up with a 100 watt lamp for two minutes, then let it cool all the way down to room temp. I then reassembled and it been working for the last three days.
NOTE: the solder connections are on top of the mother PCB (GPU) on the TX 1000 its towards the top front on the DV 8***. SO the top side is what you would heat up unlike the graphics chip fix.

Hey I was having the same problem with the wireless disappearing and found a SOLUTION at last.

It seems to work now but im still testing it.
    1.Go to device manager.
2.Uninstall network driver, usually driver for ethernet. In my case, its Realtech RTL8101E Family PCI-E Fast Ethernet NIC.
    3.Restart your computer
    The problem should be fixed.
If not then find your Nvidea driver in device manager, right click, then roll back to previous driver.
And repeat the initial steps (1, 2 and 3)
    Restart computer.

    Hope this helps!

  • Jehad

Ok people, after 4 days of intensive research I fell on a forum where someone suggested a solution to the wireless vanishing. It perfectly worked for me and I hope it solves your problem because I know how frustration when the laptop doesn’t recognize your wireless adapter anymore.

The solution is to go into the BIOS. You will have to access it.

    1. Be sure to have the latest driver
    2. Restart computer and as soon it boots, press F10 to assess the bios.
    3. Go to boot start and ENABLE the network adapter
    4. Exit and click yes to save changes

Hope this helps. I have learned not to buy HP laptops anymore.

  • Jehad

    ***************** CORRECTION ******************* see below

Sorry people I have skipped some steps
    1. Be sure to have the latest driver
    2. Restart computer and as soon it boots, press F10 to assess the bios.
    3. Go to SYSTEM CONFIGURATION and then into BOOT OPTION
    4. Enable the INTERNAL NETWORK ADAPTER BOOT
    4. Exit and click yes to save changes

    Again sorry for the mistake.
    Hope this solves the problem.

  • MarkB

I have a Compaq F700 (F730US) with this same problem. I have tried ALL of these remedies – save the reformat and Windows reinstall – to no avail. Still no wireless – it will not even see the card installed. I even bought a replacement card and it is not seen either. Warranty ran out over two years ago (12/27/08) and I am at some what of a loss here. I have record of the NVIDIA Class Action suit, but this model is not included. Is there any further pending action for this problem for those with the unfortunate luck to own one of these super-expensive door-stops?

Umm….sorry chief but enabling the network adapter to boot has nothing to do with whether or not the adapter will actually be found in device manager, not to mention it has nothing to do with the actual devices functionality. Nice effort but FAIL….
